Carter and Fannie P. Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Anthony. She is survived by three sisters, Lucille Proctor of Hempstead, N. Y., Thelma I. (Joh n) Cobbs, Denver, Colorado and Christine (James ``Pete"") Morton of Radford; and two sisters-in-law, Priscilla Carter of Radford and Thelma Carter of Woodlawn. BUKY, Jesse Davis, (``J.D.''), 76, of Buchanan, died Tuesday, November 19, 1996. He was a memebr of The Buchanan Odd Fellows Lodge No. 151 and Mt. Joy Rebekah Lodge No. 59. BUTTS, Mary Emma Rogers, 88, of Salem, died Wednesday, November 20, 1996 at her home. Mrs. Butts received a degree in Library Science from William & Mary Extension in Richmond. Mrs. Butts founded North Cross School in 1944, served as a librarian for the City of Salem, and was a member of the Salem Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Howard U. Butts; two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard U., Jr. and Nancy Butts, Troutville, Dr. Edward B. and Sharon Butts, Virginia Beach; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Larry Kelley, Reston; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 22, 11 a.m. at the Salem Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dean Lindsey officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the Salem Library or to a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the Salem Presbyterian Church after the service. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Salem Chapel.
CANNON, Mildred L., 67, of Tarboro, N.C., died Wednesday, November 20, 1996. She was born in Giles County August 14, 1929 to the late Charles and Vonnie Link. DOCKERY, Richard A. (``Dick""), 49, of Vinton, formerly of Salem died Tuesday, November 19, 1996. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving with the U.S. Navy and was well-known as a commercial artist specializing in murals, lettering, and pin striping on automobiles and race cars. He was also a member of the Vinton Moose Lodge. Mr. Dockery is survived by his parents, Henry and Evadene Dockery of Salem; sister and brother-in-law, Catherine (``Kitten"") and Barry Cumbie; daughter, Andrea Dockery; and former wife, Lyn Maley Dockery; stepchildren, David Barbour and Lisa Carr, Michelle Looney, Nicole Maley, and Wayne Allen; six grandchildren all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 22, 1996 in the John M Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem with the Larry Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Sherwood Memorial Park with military honors by VFW Post 1264. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
FESSLER, Donald Roy, 89, of Blacksburg, died late Monday, November 18, 1996. He was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1907, a son of Otto George and Ethel Andres Fessler. He received his A.B. degree from Grinnell College and taught in China in schools at Tehchow, Shantung, T'unghsien, Beijing East for six years. He was Director of the Northwest Institute of International Relations at Reed College in Portland, Ore. prior to serving in the U.S. Army in China in World War II. He received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University and did graduate work at the University of Colorado, Harvard, and in Chinese at Yale. From 1952 to 1972 he was Extension Sociologist and Community Development Specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service at VPI&SU, later becoming Director of Community Leader Training Associates, in which capacity he conducted training in problem solving and effective group techniques for government agencies, denominational bodies and voluntary organizations throughout the southeastern states. He was the author of the training manuals in the Community Training Library, half a dozen Cooperative Extension publications on organizational techniques, articles in national periodicals, chapters in sociological studies and two books on community development. Dr. Fes sler was former president of the Council of the Southern Mountains and of the Adult Education Association of Virginia, a member of the Executive Committee of the Adult Education Association of the USA and Chairman of its Community Development Section. He was a longtime member of the Executive Committee of the Va. Tech YMCA, an officer of the Blacksburg Regional Art Association, former member of the Montgomery County Electoral Board and Secretary of the NRV Human Resources job-training agency. The Fesslers were hosts to a number of foreign students at Va. Tech. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ryland Fessler; and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Eleanor Sue Sullivan of Salisbury, Md. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions be made to the Va.
