NORTH STAR KARATE of Roanoke recently hosted testing for advanced-belt designations. Awarded first-degree black belts were Joe Allen Hartmanand Charlotte Martin.

Others promoted were: David and Susan Rolfe, owners of North Star Karate, second-degree black belt, and Ron Ferguson, third-degree black belt.

The testing board consisted of nine black belts from Martinsville, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Amelia, and included Lawrence Arthur, founder of American freestyle karate.
