ICE, SNOW MAKE EARLY APPEARANCE

An early winter storm dropped a thin layer of snow, slush and some sleet Thursday across parts of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and the central Piedmont.

More nasty precipitation was expected overnight. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather warning for this morning in the central Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont areas north of Charlottesville.

There also was a threat of overnight snow and sleet in the southwest between Blacksburg and the North Carolina border and in Northern Virginia.

The heaviest snow accumulations - a few inches - were in the central Shenandoah Valley and across the Blue Ridge Mountains in Albemarle County.

The most snow reported by nightfall was 3 inches near Gordonsville along the Louisa-Orange county line. Temperatures in the middle to upper 30s kept roadways only wet.

But the weather service predicted the snowfall totals would reach 4 inches to 6 inches by the time the storm tapered off after midnight, with even higher amounts in the mountains.

That could mean dangerous driving in the morning.

The mess won't last long, however. The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the 40s across the state today.
