Moreno gets Chamber post
CHRISTIANSBURG - Franklyn H. Moreno, former executive director of the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance, is the new membership director for the Virginia Chamber of Commerce for the Shenandoah Valley and Southwest Virginia regions.
Hugh Keogh, president of the Virginia chamber, extolled Moreno's knowledge of Western Virginia and his established reputation.
Moreno, the former is a certified economic developer and member of the American Economic Development Council. He has a master's degree in community development and a bachelor's degree in product and shelter design from Southern Illinois University. He also is head of Moreno and Associates consulting firm.
Downtown Radford to kick off season
RADFORD - Radford's downtown retailers will kick off the Christmas shopping season today from 1 to 5 p.m. with their annual Holiday Open House, sponsored by Main Street Radford.
Merchants will show off their wares in a hometown atmosphere. The city's electric department will have decorations up in time for the event.

WPUV sold to New York man
PULASKI - WPUV 1580 AM has been sold to Robert H. Teachout, a former radio announcer from Syracuse, N.Y.
Former owner "Mountain Bill" Hale and his wife, Becky Ann, will continue to serve as on-air hosts in the mornings and afternoons, respectively. Teachout said he plans no format changes to the Christian Country station. WPUV first signed on in 1947 and is the only AM station in the New River Valley to be in continuous operation since then.
Teachout also has been an announcer in Atlanta and became general manager of WAMN AM in Bluefield, W.Va., in 1992. During his time in Bluefield he joined Company C of the Virginia Defense Force, which is based in Pulaski.
Farm taxes workshops set
CHRISTIANSBURG - Virginia Cooperative Extension has scheduled workshops on farm taxes in several locations in the New River Valley in December.
The office points out that little can be done to reduce the current year's tax liability after Dec. 31.
Workshop topics include: 1996 tax law changes; minimum wage laws; tax savings tips; new rules for individual retirement accounts; health insurance for farmers; hobby farms; capital expenses; and the difference between independent contractors and employees.
The schedule is: Dec. 3 in the Giles County Administration Building in Pearisburg, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Dec. 5 in the extension education room of Pulaski County's Administration building in Pulaski, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Dec. 6 in the community room of the Christiansburg branch of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, from 1 to 3 p.m.; Dec. 9 in Floyd High School's vocational agriculture classroom, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
