CAR FLIES OUT OF CONTROL, TWO INJURED

A Christiansburg man remained in critical condition Saturday after an accident late Friday. He was a passenger in a car which went out of control and flew through the air before striking a utility pole.

Wesley Eugene Jones, 18, of Christiansburg, was riding in a 1984 Camaro, driven by a Riner juvenile whom police would not identify because of his age, east on Clearview Drive near Wimmer Street about 11:25 p.m., Christiansburg Police Officer B.S. Baker said.

Baker said the car came over a hill probably going about 75 mph in a 25-mph zone, as evidenced by marks on the road and damage to the car, when the driver lost control. The car continued for about 65 feet along the right shoulder before it crossed over the road and sailed about 39 feet through the air before hitting a utility pole while still airborne, Baker said.

Christiansburg Rescue Squad members cut Jones from the car, Baker said. He was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was listed Saturday in critical condition in the neurotrauma unit, a resource nurse said.

The juvenile driver was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital and released, Baker said.
