SHOTGUN USED IN RADFORD HOMICIDE

A 21-year-old woman found in her apartment over the weekend died from a shotgun wound to the head, authorities said Monday.

Chad Joseph LaRue is charged with the first-degree murder of Melissa Ann Dyal, Radford police said. LaRue had been out all night and is accused of shooting Dyal after returning to the residence they shared at 1708 Grove Ave. at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, city police said.

LaRue, 26, was arrested elsewhere in the apartment building after police were called to the scene to investigate a shooting.

He is being held under $35,000 bond in the Radford City Jail. Because of this week's holiday break he won't be arraigned until Monday, Radford Commonwealth's Attorney Randal Duncan said.

Authorities said both LaRue and Dyal were originally from Florida. They had been living in Radford for some time, but were not Radford University students, police said.

The investigation of the shooting - the first apparent murder in Radford in recent memory - is continuing and additional charges may be lodged against LaRue, police said.
