Shammond Williams scored eight points in a key second-half run and Antawn Jamison added 12 in the final 7:22 as No. 14 North Carolina escaped Richmond for the second straight season, beating the Spiders 86-75 Monday night in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Tar Heels (1-1) were in jeopardy of their first home-opening loss since January 1929. They trailed 61-55 with 10 minutes left and the Spiders (0-1), who almost beat North Carolina at the Smith Center last season, were wearing them down with their depth and experience.
However, Williams sank a pair of 3-pointers during a 15-2 run and his two free throws with 8:48 left gave the Tar Heels the lead for good. The game had 22 lead changes and eight ties.
Rick Edwards led the Spiders with 13 points, while Jarod Stevenson added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The first half produced 15 lead changes and five ties with neither team leading by more than five points.

No. 3 Wake Forest 86, The Citadel 52: In Charleston, S.C., Tim Duncan had 21 points, 12 rebounds and did just about whatever he wanted for the Demon Deacons.
Duncan, Wake's do-everything center, actually did against the Bulldogs (0-1). He scored two of the first three baskets for the Demon Deacons (2-0) and was 8-of-9 from the floor for the half.
Jamie Jenkins had 16 points to lead The Citadel, which chose to play Duncan one-on-one most of the first half.
No. 2 Kansas 82, LSU 53: In Lahaina, Hawaii, the Jayhawks (2-0) scored the game's first 18 points and rolled to an easy victory in the first round of the Maui Invitational.
The Jayhawks led 45-22 at the half and upped their lead to 38 points in the second half as coach Roy Williams substituted freely. Raef LaFrentz had 23 points to lead Kansas, which will meet the Iowa-California winner in the next round.
No. 15 Massachusetts 59, Chaminade 48: In Lahaina, Hawaii, Tyrone Weeks scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Minutemen won in James Flint's coaching debut in the Maui Invitational.
Carmelo Travieso added 16 points for UMass, which dominated with its bulkier frontline. Of the Minutemen's 36 rebounds, 15 were off the offensive boards and they led to 18 points.
UMass advances to face Virginia, a 93-70 winner over South Carolina, at 7 p.m. in today's second round.
No. 23 Boston College 82, New Hampshire 40: In Boston, Danya Abrams scored 16 points before leaving with a bruised knee as the Eagles rolled to victory.
Abrams, the Big East preseason player of the year, left the game with 11:47 left in the second half and had his left knee wrapped with ice and a bandage. He did not return, but the Eagles (2-0) didn't need him against the overmatched Wildcats (1-1).
James Madison 86, Shippensburg 67: In Harrisonburg, Chatney Howard scored 22 points, including eight during a 22-3 run to open the second half, as the Dukes (1-1) ripped Division II Shippensburg. JMU made 23 of 29 shots (79.3 percent) after the break.
Old Dominion 65, Toledo 57: In Norfolk, Mark Poag scored 16 points and Odell Hodge added 13 as the Monarchs downed the Rockets. The Monarchs (2-0) held Toledo (0-1) to 28 percent shooting in the first half, taking a 34-19 lead.
Liberty 64, Maine 53: In Orono, Maine, Larry Jackson scored 22 points and Peter Aluma added 16 as the Flames (2-0) turned back the Black Bears. Jackson scored 13 of his game-high total in the first half and seven of his team's first 20 points, carrying his team to a 20-9 lead with 6:54 to go in the half.
William and Mary 67, Hampton 63: In Hampton, Bobby Fitzgibbons scored nine of his 23 points in a 16-0 run early in the second half in the win for the Tribe (2-0). Efrem Carter had 16 points for the Pirates (0-1).
Forsyth Tech 103, Virginia Western 89: In Roanoke, Matt Woolwine scored a game-high 28 points to lead five Blue Stars in double figures, but Virginia Western lost its opener to Forsyth Tech. Chris Mattox added 16 points, Adam Gray scored 11 and Chris Firebaugh and Brian Jackson added 10 apiece for the Blue Stars.
