A construction worker was killed Monday when an 11-foot-deep ditch collapsed on him, authorities said.
Fairfax County fire spokeswoman Renee Henningsen said the man was partially buried. Rescue workers saw his shoulders and arm sticking out of the ground.
``He had about two tons of dirt fall on him,'' said Capt. Larry Collier of the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department.
Collier said the man was a subcontractor hired to dig a ditch for a home expansion. He said the man got off his backhoe Monday and walked into the ditch, whereupon one side of the ditch collapsed, pinning him.
Investigators were still on the scene late Monday. Fairfax police spokeswoman Sharon Smith said police had not determined the victim's identity.
