ROANOKE TIMES Copyright (c) 1996, Roanoke Times DATE: Tuesday, November 26, 1996 TAG: 9611260126 SECTION: SPORTS PAGE: B3 EDITION: METRO TYPE: COLLEGE FOOTBALL SOURCE: FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS North Carolina and Clemson both accepted bowl bids on Monday. North Carolina athletic director John Swofford said the school ``enthusiastically accepts'' the Gator Bowl's invitation to play on New Year's Day. Clemson will spend its holiday at the Peach Bowl.
``It's something we had our eyes on; it was a realistic goal,'' coach Tommy West said Monday after accepting the bowl's invitation to play Dec. 28 at the Georgia Dome. ``It's great for the football team and the Clemson family because it's close. We really think this is the perfect match.''
Neither opponent has been decided. North Carolina will face a team from the Big East, and there's a possibility that the Tar Heels could play Syracuse a second time, having beaten them in the Carrier Dome earlier this season.
The Tigers will face a Southeastern Conference opponent, most likely Louisiana State or Auburn. The SEC bowl picture probably won't be cleared up until that league's title game, also at the Georgia Dome, on Dec. 7.
