Two church coalitions, one from Virginia and one from North Carolina, have received a $2.4 million federal housing grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to build subsidized apartments for the elderly.
``We're trying to provide affordable housing for elderly people,'' said Eddie Tison, an elder at Northside Church of Christ in Newport News. The church is one of six on the Peninsula belonging to Golden Age Christian Home, a consortium of 18 Virginia churches that has built similar apartments in Mechanicsville and Roanoke.
