BAYSE, Frank A., 86, of Chesapeake, and formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, November 26, 1996. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

BOWLES, Myrtle G., 94, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at home. She was the widow of Roy E. Bowles, a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Surviving are a daughter, Joan E. Smith, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Gregory Vaughn, David Vaughn, Lisa Wood, all of Roanoke; five great-grandchildren, and a special thanks to a special nurse, Pat Quarles. Funeral services will be conducted from the gr aveside, Evergreen Burial Park at 1 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. James W. Reynolds officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

BOYD, Colonel Earl W., U.S. Air Force, Retired, of Moneta, died on Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at age 75 in a Salem hospital. He was born October 9, 1921 in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Kliness Boyd and Mary Thompson Boyd. He is survived by his wife, Mildred C. Boyd of the family residence in Moneta; a son, Michael K. Boyd of Heidelberg, Germany; a daughter, Virginia J. Lilley of Richmond; a stepson, Richard L. Sutphin of Goodview; stepdaughters, Nancy Sutphin and Margaret Sutphin of Bedford; four grandchildren, Lauren, Richard, Christopher, and Rae Lea. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Gustafson. Col. Boyd joined the U.S. Army Air Corp as a private in January 1942, became an Aviation Cadet, earned his wings as a navigator and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and retired as a Colonel of the U.S. Air Force in January 1973. During his 31 years of military service, he spent ten years on overseas assignments and accumulated over five thousand hours of flying time. During his later years of service he was assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense as Director of NATO Affairs and developed international programs of U.S. and West European defense against the Soviet Bloc. His military awards include the Legion of Merit (awarded twice), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Commendation Medal and Campaign Medals for the American Theater, the Middle East and Africa theater, the Asiatic Pacific theater medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Berlin Airlift Insignia. After retirement from the Air Force, Col. Boyd joined the RAND Research Corporation as an international military/political defense analyst of east-west issues. During his ten years with RAND he gained international recognition as an expert on NATO defense issues in Washington and NATO Capitols. During his association with RAND, Col. Boyd authored and co-authored seven RAND Reports. Several were released to foreign governments by the Secretaries of Defense and State and were also endorsed by Congressional Defense Committees. In 1973 Col. Boyd purchased a farm near Moneta and developed it as a tree farm as part of a life-long hobby of conservation. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, November 30, 1996, at 2 p.m. at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Children's National Hospital, Washington, D.C., or the Moneta Rescue Squad, Route 2, Box 446-A, Bedford, Va. 24523.

CONKLIN, Lois Belle Chapman, 82, of Lexington, died Monday, November 25, 1996, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Lexington. Born May 24, 1914 in East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Lena Conklin Chapman. She was a member of Lincolnia United Methodist Church of Alexandria. Surviving are a daughter, Shelby C. Brown, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sons, George W. Conklin Jr., Falls Church, Harold L. Conklin, Lexington; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, November 30, 1996, at noon from the Lincolnia United Methodist Church, Alexandria, with Rev. Eugene F. Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in National Memorial Park, Falls Church. Harrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CROUSE, William Roby, 60, of Galax, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence.

FLETCHER, James Mason, 61, o f 826 Westwood Avenue, Hampton, formerly of Narrows, died Monday, November 25, 1996, in Richmond. He was born in Giles County on January 22, 1935, and was the son of the late Ivy Mason and Virgie Carter Fletcher. He was a retired crane operator at the Newport News Shipbuilding Yards in Newport News, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rakes Fletcher; four sons, Robert Fletcher and James S. Fletcher, both of Richmond, Richard A. Fletcher, Pesadena, Fla., Ronald E. Fletcher, Greenville, N.C.; a daughter, Brenda A. Fletcher, Largo, Fla.; four brothers, Randall Fletcher, Roy Fletcher, both of Narrows, Ronald Fletcher, Pearisburg, Joe Fletcher, Greenville, W.Va.; four sisters, Marie Robertson, Pearisburg, Doris Williams, Narrows, Louise Baker, Shawsville, Reba Robertson, Virginia Beach; six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. E. H. Shaver officiating. Burial will follow in Angel's Rest Cemetery, Narrows. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's in Narrows Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

HUFFMAN, Harold Carter, 74, of Pembroke, died Monday, November 25, 1996, at his home. Born in Craig County, he was a son of Cambia (``Huffy"") Caldwell Huffman of Pembroke and the late Lamah P. Huffman. Harold was a member of Gravel Hill Christian Church in Craig County and served his country in World War II as a member of the U.S. Army. He was retired from the Hoechst-Celanese Celco Plant. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Joy H. Huffman; a son and his wife, Michael and Penny A. Huffman of Nashville, Tenn., and two grandsons, Jon Michael Huffman and Logan Kent Huffman, both of Nashville. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, 1996, at 3 p.m., in the Caldwell Cemetery near Simmonsville in Craig County. There will be a gathering of friends and family for visitation at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 1996, at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that some kindness to someone be rendered in Harold's name.

JENKINS, William Frederick, II, (``Willie''), 36, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, November 26, 1996. He was Area Supervisor with Country Cookin for 17 years. He attended Cave Spring United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Janet Jenkins; a son, Jackson W. Jenkins; his parents, William and Lois Jenkins, Culpeper; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary S. and Karen E. Jenkins, Waldorf, Md. KESSLER, Catherine H., 74, of 650 North Jefferson St., Roanoke, formerly of Vinton, passed away Monday, November 25, 1996. She was the widow of J. Kessler, Decatur, Ala.; granddaughters, Kari and Kristi Kessler; a brother, H. Francis Hill, Hurlock, Md. A devoted companion, Joyce Holdren.
