The Science Museum of Western Virginia has announced its winter programs.
``Taking Care of Our Planet'' will teach preschoolers 31/2 to 5 how what they do affects where they live. The workshops begin Jan. 7 and meet Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks at 10 a.m.-noon or 1-3 p.m. The fee is $90.
A two-day workshop to familiarize parent/child teams with the basics of binary programming, ``Advanced Robotics,'' includes building a progammable Navius robot to take home. The $60 cost includes materials and instruction. This hands-on adventure will take place Dec. 7 and 8 from 2-4 p.m.
``Build Your Own Bat Model Workshop,'' for bat-o-philes ages 8 to 14, will address bat-related issues and teach about Chiroptera. Participants will build a see-through bat during the program Dec. 21 from 1-4 p.m. The $15 cost includes materials and instructions.
If you'd like a working knowledge of basic photography, join children 10 and older Jan. 18 for a workshop, ``Chemistry, Art and Oatmeal: Pinhole Photography.'' Learn how to build a camera out of an oatmeal box, a copper plate and tape, then learn how to produce images through a pinhole camera.
The $25 fee covers all costs.
``Building Fun with Light: Kaleidoscope Workshop,'' for ages 5 to 10, will teach about light by building a kaleidoscope. On Feb. 8, kindergartners through second graders can participate from 1-4 p.m. On Feb. 22, at the same time, children in the third through fifth grades can partake. The $20 fee covers everything.
