Early admission applications to Virginia Tech are up 32 percent from last year.
The university received 1,856 applications by the Nov.1 deadline from students who plan to attend Tech next fall if accepted, according to a news release.
The increased demand for admission last year resulted in this year's crop of 5,100 first-year students - the university's largest freshman class ever. Total enrollment for the fall semester is 24,800.
Tech's reputation as a leader in information technology, its strong academics and scenic location have helped attract students, said acting admissions director Karen Torgersen.
Tech, the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia were the only state schools ranked in the top 100 colleges and universities this year by U.S. News and World Report. Staff report
