GRANTS FOCUS ON HEALTH CARE

SCHOOL NURSES AND A DENTAL CLINIC will be funded in Alleghany County. The money comes from a foundation created with the sale of the area's hospital.

Nearly $1 million of the $1.5 million in grants announced by the Alleghany Foundation will be used to hire school nurses and pay for a mobile dental clinic for schools in Alleghany County, Clifton Forge and Covington. The money became available this week.

The foundation holds $35 million in a charitable trust set up last year when Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. of Nashville bought the nonprofit Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.

Grants announced Monday also include $115,104 to fund a technology program at Clifton Middle School that will use computer-aided instruction to provide students with basic knowledge in high-tech fields such as fiber optics, robotics, satellite communication and computer drafting. Other awards include:

* A grant of $219,653 for expansion and renovation of the Clifton Forge Public Library;

* A grant of $93,000 to the Alleghany Highland YMCA to make child care more accessible for students and faculty at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College by providing transportation from the college to the YMCA's child care center;

* A total of $34,020 to Alleghany Highlands Arts Council, $25,000 of which will be used to match contributions from area residents and businesses and the remainder to underwrite an artist-in-residence program.

The foundation received 42 applications with requests for $9.7 million, according to James D. Snyder, president of the foundation board. Its awards totaled $1,464,982.

Beginning next year, the foundation will make awards twice a year. Applications for grants are due March 1 and Sept. 1. Nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations that wish to submit proposals can receive the guidelines by calling 540-962-0970 or by visiting the foundation office at 450 W. Main St. in Covington between 9 a.m. and 4:30 pm. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
