Two suspects in a Southwest Roanoke convenience store robbery were found asleep in the back yard of a nearby home early Wednesday.
Ruben Geraldo Velasquez, 26, of the 800 block of Marshall Avenue Southwest and a 16-year-old boy from Southwest Roanoke were charged with robbery.
Velasquez also was charged with use of a firearm. He is being held without bond in Roanoke City Jail. The teen was taken to Coyner Springs Juvenile Detention Home.
Police gave this account:
Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, two masked men walked into the 7-Eleven store at 1410 Grandin Road S.W. One of the men was armed with a handgun and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk complied. The robbers also took cigarettes and a 12-pack of beer.
Police responded to the store and found two masks in a trash can in a nearby alley in the 1900 block of Maiden Lane Southwest.
Officers then found Velasquez and the teen-ager sleeping in the back yard of a home at Winborne and Westover avenues. Beer and cigarettes were found near them, police said.
