John Bumgarner scored 10 of his 28 points in the first quarter Wednesday to help Holy Cross defeat Roanoke Catholic 61-46 in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' basketball game.
The Gaels took advantage of a cold shooting performance by the Celtics to take a 14-5 lead in the first quarter. Abe Hughes added 15 points for the Gaels.
The Celtics (0-2 overall, 0-1 conference) cut their deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter, but could not overtake Holy Cross. Terron Reed completed his second double-double in two nights with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Brendan McCarthy hit four three-pointers and scored 14 points.
Girls, Cave Spring JV 57, Roanoke Catholic 12: Mindy Reynolds scored 21 points as the junior varsity Knights (1-0) coasted to a non-district victory over the Celtics (0-2) at Cave Spring.
Six players scored two points each for the Celtics.
