PROFS, RAIDERS ARE GOING STAGG

The 1996 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl will feature a rematch of the 1993 NCAA Division III championship, the first Stagg Bowl played in Salem.

Mount Union defeated Wisconsin-La Crosse 39-21 at Madison Wis., on Saturday and Rowan beat Lycoming 33-14 in the other semifinal at Glassboro, N.J.

The teams will meet in the Stagg Bowl at Salem Stadium on Dec.14. Mount Union beat Rowan 34-24 to win the 1993 championship.

Bill Borchert passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Mount Union (13-0) over defending champion Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Purple Raiders posted a 26-point third quarter.

Backup quarterback Rob Slavens combined with Brandon Hall for an 81-yard touchdown play in the third quarter, and Mike Bechtel ran 12 yards for a touchdown as La Crosse (11-2) closed to 36-21 with 10:26 remaining. Mount Union wrapped up the scoring with Bill Andrea's second field goal, from 21 yards.

Rowan defeated Lycoming behind Greg Lister's two touchdown passes and Aaron Bosco's two scoring runs. The Profs (10-2) advanced to the Stagg Bowl for the second straight season and the third time in four years..

After rushing for 127 yards in its first two playoff victories, Rowan ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns on a muddy field caused by a steady downpour. Lycoming (11-1) had allowed just 130 rushing yards in its two playoff wins.

Rowan lost to Wisconsin-LaCrosse 36-7 in last year's Stagg Bowl and fell to Mount Union 34-24 in the 1993 title game. The Profs are trying to become the college's second national champion in 1996. Rowan's men's basketball team won the Division III title in March.

Division II playoffs

Carson-Newman 29, UC-Davis 26: At Jefferson City, Tenn., backup quarterback Zac Allen hit Jacques Rumph with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds left to put Carson-Newman in the NCAA Division II championship game.

Carson-Newman (12-1) plays Northern Colorado (11-3) on Dec. 13 in the championship in Florence, Ala. Northern Colorado beat Clarion, Pa., 19-18 in its semifinal game on Saturday. UC-Davis finished 8-5.

N. Colorado 19, Clarion 18: At Clarion, Pa., Delano Washington blocked a last-second field goal attempt, enabling Northern Colorado's late comeback to stand up in a in a NCAA Division II semifinal victory.

Northern Colorado (11-3) advanced to the championship next Saturday in Florence, Ala., where the Bears will face Carson-Newman.

Trailing 18-13, Northern Colorado moved 75 yards in six plays for the winning score, Tom Beck's 8-yard touchdown pass to Omar Zuniga with 1:25 remaining. But there remained anxious moments for Northern Colorado. With nine seconds to go, Chris Weibel completed a 51-yard pass to Steve Witte. But Washington deflected Tyler Pallisin's 31-yard field-goal attempt as time expired. Clarion finished 11-3.
