PUBLIC PULSE

* Friends of the Pulaski Theatre Ltd. met privately with Pulaski officials for more than an hour early Thursday. Town Council's Finance Committee conferred with Friends President Randy Eley, Secretary Becki Gunn, Executive Board member Robert Henderson and architect Tom Douthat on matters involving potential property negotiations. Cargill Associates of Fort Worth, Texas, a consultant hired by the Friends organization, recently gathered responses from more than 1,000 questionnaires sent to random Pulaski County citizens on support and enthusiasm for reopening the former vaudeville house and movie theater as a community center.

The building was donated to Pulaski County after it closed in 1991 as a movie house. Both the town and county have contributed to its preservation. One survey question sought reaction to the idea of merging the theater project with the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley, acquiring the neighboring Elks Building and creating a long-term development plan. The organization is also planning to put a new roof on the theater, to prevent further weather damage to the historic Main Street building. The Finance Committee took no action when it returned to open session.
