CHRISTIANSBURG STAYS UNBEATEN

Andy Phillips didn't start, but he certainly finished for Christiansburg, hitting a running jumper with 1.5 seconds left to give the visiting Blue Demons a 46-44 victory Tuesday night in a Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.

The Vikings (0-3) had a 10-point first-quarter lead, but Christiansburg (5-0) rallied with an 18-point second quarter.

Michael Kazee had 17 points and Eric Lucas 14 - nine of those on a perfect night at the free-throw line. Nat Franklin was the Vikings' only double-figure scorer.

Floyd County 79, Patrick County 58: The Buffaloes remained undefeated, pulling away from the Cougars in the second quarter for a non-district victory in Stuart.

Travis Cantrell scored 21 points and Jason Dalton had 20 for Floyd County (4-0).

The Buffaloes outscored Patrick County 26-7 in the second quarter after repeatedly catching it in a 2-2-1 half-court trap.

Corey Reynolds scored 31 points to lead the Cougars (3-2), one off his average this season.

Staunton River 61, Bassett 56: Chris Martin scored 14 points to lead the Golden Eagles past the Bengals in a non-district game in Moneta.

K.C. Carroll had 12 points for Staunton River (3-1) and Matt Roberts added 11.

Keith Harvey led Bassett (3-3) with 20 points.

Magna Vista 56, Morehead (N.C.) 38: Landa Martin scored 10 of his 18 points in the second quarter as the Warriors (3-2) won in Morehead.

Magna Vista outscored Morehead 21-5 in the second quarter to go up 31-17. Marcus Hairston added 12 points for the Warriors.

Brittain Cherry led Morehead with 10 points.

Covington 78, Buffalo Gap 72: William Stewart scored 17 points as the Cougars (1-2) won a non-district game over the Bison (1-5) in Covington.

Travis Bogar contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds and Tracey Walker added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Cougars. Bogar and Walker scored 10 points each in the fourth quarter to lead Covington to the victory.

Jeff Jennings led the Bison with 23 points.

Craig County 44, Shawsville 43: Mike Fisher scored 15 points to lead the Rockets (1-3) to a non-district victory over the Shawnees (0-4) in New Castle.

With his team trailing 43-41, Ben Elmore hit a field goal and was fouled with four seconds left in the game. Elmore hit the free throw to give the Rockets a one-point victory.

Larry Smith led the Shawnees with 11 points.

Liberty 98, Franklin County 62: Raymond Arrington scored nine of his game-high 23 points in the second quarter as the Minutemen won a non-district game over the Eagles in Bedford.

Liberty (4-0) went on a 24-6 run in the last five minutes of the first half to spark the victory. Rodney Morris added 13 points for the Minutemen.

Jeremy Adkins scored 13 points for Franklin County (1-6).

Chilhowie 70, Bland 61: Earl Allen scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors (1-1) defeated the Rockets (1-2) in a non-district matchup in Chilhowie.

The Warriors trailed 53-44 after three quarters, but outscored the Rockets 26-8 in the fourth behind Allen and Joel Donnelly, who had nine of his 24 points in the quarter. Allen and Donnelly grabbed 11 rebounds each.

Heath Puckett led Bland with 15 points.

Laurel Park 50, Dan River 45: Tony Carter hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer - his only points of the game - with a minute left as the Lancers remained unbeaten with a victory over the Wildcats in Martinsville.

Dan River (0-6) battled back from a seven-point deficit to tie the score at 45 before Carter hit his big shot. Jeff Slade added two free throws to complete the scoring.

Slade scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter, and Eric Jones added 13 points for Laurel Park (5-0), which held a 34-19 rebounding advantage and hit 12 of 15 free-throw attempts.

Lloyd Tillman scored 19 points and Alan Petty 14 for Dan River.

Tunstall 59, Fieldale-Collinsville 50: Derrick Rogers scored 17 points and Jermaine Motley added 16 as the Trojans rallied past the Cavaliers in a non-district game in Dry Fork.

Tunstall was down by 13 early in the third quarter when it went on a 30-10 run to take control. Fieldale-Collinsville battled back to cut the deficit to two with 1:30 to go, but the Trojans held on for the victory.

Joey Taylor scored 17 points for Fieldale-Collinsville.

James River 74, Covington Boys' Home 66: Quincy Springs led a quintet of double-figure scorers as the Knights held off the Indians in Covington.

Springs scored 17 points, Joey Ingram had 13, Travis Blankenship and Phil Meter had 12 each and Will Goad contributed 10 for James River (3-4).

Mike White led Covington Boys' Down with 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Chris Hampton had 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Rocky Gap 80, Montcalm (W.Va.) 67: Matthew Akers had a career-high 25 points, six assists and five rebounds as the Eagles downed Montcalm in Rocky Gap.

Akers, a junior guard, and his brother, sophomore guard Adam, led Rocky Gap (2-3) to the non-district victory. Adam Akers added 14 points.

Montcalm's Josh Bailey scored 13 of his 28 points in one stretch of the third quarter to cut the Eagles' lead to two points, but they pulled away. Montcalm got 12 points from Kevin Tiller.

Rockbridge County 62, Alleghany 60: Ricky Wright scored 16 points and Luke Serber added 14 as the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0) downed the Mountaineers (1-3, 0-1) in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Low Moor.

Casey Burks hit the front of a one-and-one for his 18th point with nine seconds remaining in the game to forge a 60-60 tie. But Jason Hannah responded with a bucket with one second left on the clock for the Wildcats.

Ramey Pendleton led Alleghany with 22 points.

Parry McCluer 48, Glenvar 40: The Fighting Blues (5-0) remained unbeaten with a non-district victory, thanks to 16-for-21 marksmanship at the free-throw line.

Glenvar (1-4), led by Josh Williamson's game-high 19 points, was 4-of-7 from the line. Chip Coleman paced the visitors from Buena Vista with 13 points.

Grayson County 59, Carroll County 54: Wes Self and Derek Phipps combined for 41 points, including eight 3-pointers, to lead the Blue Devils past the Cavaliers in Hillsville.

Self scored 23 points and hit three 3-pointers and Phipps had five 3-pointers among his 18 points. Chad McMillian added 11 points for Grayson County (3-0), which overcame 11-for-24 free-throw shooting.

Ballard Christian 90, Gateway Christian 75: The Crusaders (1-4) went on the road to West Virginia and were bombed by Ballard's 14 3-pointgoals.

Allen Surface and Chris Kirtner combined for 54 points for the Blacksburg school.
