LIFE OF HELPING HONORED BY GIFT

``Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends." These words from the Book of John are inscribed on a plaque that was given to E.B. "Johnny" Arrington by the Vinton First Aid Crew on the group's 50th anniversary in 1989. Arrington, who died in 1993, was one of the crew's founding members.

This holiday season his widow, Jewel Arrington, decided to honor her husband's lifelong dedication to helping people by donating to the Good Neighbors Fund.

"He jumped into the [Roanoke] river, fully clothed, as others stood helplessly on the bank, and rescued a drowning woman early in our relationship at a Sunday school outing many years ago," she remembers. "That brand-new suit was never quite the same! But he continued throughout his life to `jump in' whenever a fellow human being needed help."
