Torgersen says problems are correctable

Virginia Tech President Paul Torgersen said Wednesday the criminal problems plaguing members of the university's football team are correctable and will be corrected.

Two football players were charged with rape and attempted sodomy of a fellow Tech student Monday, little more than two weeks before Tech plays in one of the nation's premier bowl games. Both players have been booted from Tech's squad until further notice.

Torgersen told The Roanoke Times that athletic director Dave Braine will report to the university's Board of Visitors in February how the Athletic Department will prevent the problems that have seen 18 current or former Tech players face criminal charges in the past year.

The university's Faculty Senate also voted 20-10 Tuesday night to approve a resolution condemning violence or unlawful conduct by any member of the university community. The Senate said it was disturbed by the pattern of violent and unlawful conduct by team members and would "support further severe measures imposed on players, teams or coaches and other administrators should these be necessary to prevent" such misconduct by student athletes.
