THE HOKIES add a 6-foot-7 defensive end and a 6-6 tight end from Pittsburgh.
Virginia Tech has received at least two new football commitments, with more expected in the near future.
Fork Union Military Academy coach John Shuman said 6-foot-7, 240-pound defensive end Dave Kadela has committed to the Hokies and apparently has rejected overtures from Northwestern and Stanford.
Also, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported 6-6, 230-pound tight end Bob Slowikowski from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh will sign with Tech.
Kadela, from Dublin, Ohio, played defensive end for Fork Union and saw some playing time on offense when Fork Union used two tight ends. He could play on the offensive line for Tech.
``He's big, tall and smart - real smart,'' said Shuman, who added that Kadela has a 3.9 grade-point average and scored 1,270 on the Scholastic Assessment Test. ``He does a lot of things because he's so smart.
``He's a `future' kind of guy. You can move him around. If he doesn't pan out on defense, just move him to offense. He's put on 25 pounds since he got here. He was just a big rail coming out of the summer.''
Tech also was close to a commitment from another Fork Union player, Derek Carter, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound tight end and defensive end. Tech coach Frank Beamer was to meet with Carter in his Smithfield home Thursday.
