Governor won't boost faculty raises
Faculty at the state's colleges and universities did not get the Christmas present they had hoped for from Gov. George Allen on Friday. In his list of amendments for this second year of a two-year budget, Allen left faculty raises at 2 percent, rather than boosting raises to 5 percent as many faculty had hoped. This leaves the issue of possible salary adjustments in the hands of legislators for now. For more on this story, see today's Virginia section.
Group files second 'smart road' suit
An environmental coalition in the New River Valley has filed its second lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Roanoke over the proposed "smart" road to be built through Montgomery County's rural Ellett Valley. The suit seeks to force state highway officials to complete an environmental impact statement on added features planned for the smart road, such as snow-blowing towers and trailer sites, not included in the original road plans. This would give the public an opportunity to comment on these issues. For details, see today's Virginia section.
