BROWN, Graham Baxter, 80, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996, at the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center, Buena Vista. Mr. Brown was born on December 13, 1916, a son of the late John Baxter Brown and Ethel Hess Brown. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, Steeles Tavern, a 32nd Degree Mason with the Raphine Lodge, a veteran of World War II, and retired from DuPont in Waynesboro, May 1, 1979, after 39 years of service. Mr. Brown is survived by a brother, William D. Brown; and a sister, Helen Brown, both of Fairfield. He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews; and a friend, Mrs. Lucille Wade. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, December 28, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, Steeles Tavern, with Rev. C. William Cox officiating. BURNETT, W. Wallace, 78, of Hendersonville, N.C., passed away Wednesday, December 25, 1996, in Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Burnett. A native of St. Davids, Ontario, Canada, Mr. Burnett joined Nabisco Foods Ltd. in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in 1947. Mr. Burnett was an executive in the International Division of Nabisco and completed two overseas assignments including Deputy Chairman and Company Director of Nabisco Pty. Ltd. in Melbourne, Australia, and Executive Vice President of Yamazaki-Nabisco in Tokyo, Japan. Survivors include his wife, Joan Burnett; four children, Charles Burnett, Jean Eannarino, Helen Burnett, and Susan Beisler; three stepchildren, Andrea Freeman, David Miller and Michael Miller; seven grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 29, 1996, 2 p.m., at Hetherington and Deans in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Interment will follow in St. Davids, Ontario. CARBAUGH, Margaret Ellen Neel, 97, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Carbaugh, daughter, Rachel Delphine Miller, granddaughters, J oyce Ellen Carbaugh and Pamela Annette Bashaw. Mrs. Carbaugh was born April 4, 1899, a daughter of John Edward Neel and Mary Jane Yost Neel. She was a member of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church. Survivors include six sons, Carl, George, Robert, and Lewis, all of Roanoke, William E. of Prince George, and James E. of Connecticut; five daughters, Dorothy C. Brown, Margaret C. Bashaw and Jean C. Whitehurst, all of Roanoke, Sibyl C. Matson, Betty C. Atkins, both of North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Donald H. Roberts. The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
CLARK, Geraldine Wilhelm, 75, of Lexington, died Wednesday, December 25, 1996, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born May 2, 1921 in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Gardner Wilhelm and Laura Entsminger Wilhelm. Mrs. Clark was a memb er of Lauderdale A.R.P. Born September 12, 1914 in Buena Vista, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Mc-Cory Hite. DUNBAR, Henry Cape Jr., (``Hal""), of Miami, Fla., died Sunday, December 22, 1996, after a long illness, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Miami, Fla. He was born in Brockton, Mass., February 24, 1928, attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pa., Damascus High School, Damascus, Abingdon Academy, Abingdon, and graduated from Virginia Episcopal School, Lynchburg. He received his B.S. degree in physics from Roanoke College, Salem. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. During most of his working years his business, Hal Dunbar and Associates, wholesaled marine supplies to the boat building industry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen Mock and Henry Cape Dunbar Sr., Damascus. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Lyle Dunbar of Miami, Fla., formerly of Goshen; two daughters, Elizabeth D. Murphy of Alva, Fla., and Jeanne Ellen Dunbar of Waldorf, Md.; two sons, Bruce Stuart Dunbar II of North Lauderdale, Fla. and Henry Cape Dunbar III of LeHigh Acres, Fla; one sister, Eleanor Mock Dunbar Grasselli of Damascus; one son-in-law, Lawrence J. HAMBRICK, Ralph E., 78, of Roanoke went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 25, 1996. He served in World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and was employed by the Norfolk and Western Railway for 40 years as Conductor and Brakeman. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and DAV, where he served as past Chaplain. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was a loving husband and devoted father. Regional Medical Center with some 25 years service. SCHLAMB, Maggie Smith, 101, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 25, 1996. She was the daughter of the late Noah and Priscilla Grizzle and was the widow of Alva Smith and Frank Schlamb. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Alva Smith and Noah Mack Smith. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church and a charter member of the American War Mothers Club. Surviving is a daughter, Pauline H. Weatherly, of Roanoke; two sons, C. P. Smith, Midlothian, Miles Q. Smith, Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Hess, Fort Myers, Fla.; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren. Services will be at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 12 noon Saturday, December 28, 1996. The Rev. Wayne Harrison and the Rev. Carol Johnston will officiate. SELDEN, Robert Colgate, (``Bob""), 77, of Penhook, died Tuesday, December 24,1996. He was a native of the Peninsula. Mr. Selden attended Virginia Tech and graduated from the NACA Apprentice School. He retired from NASA/Langley in 1984. Mr. Selden served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the famous 29th Infantry throughout the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was an active member of the Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren where he served as Deacon and officer on numerous committees and taught as well as serving as Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Selden was preceded in death by his son Colgate Selden. Surviving are his wife, Adeen Adams Selden of Penhock, one sister, Evelyn Clark of Smithfield, Va; and many other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 1996 with Rev. Jimmy Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. SHIVELY, Granville Carroll, 79, of Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville, husband of Virgie Hylton Shively, died Thursday, December 26, 1996 at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center. He was born in Ferrum, Va. on April 26, 1917, son of the late Sheriff Wilton Shively and Effie Morris Shively. He was an employee of American Furniture. He was a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Shively was preceded in death by two sisters, Noah (Eva) Nettles and Everett (Jewell) Peters, two nephews, Geral Clements and Clay Peters, and one niece, Robin Peters Anderson. He served in the United States Air Force in World War II. He is survived by his wive, Virgie Hylton Shively, Martinsville; two sisters, Barbara Sink, Ferrum, Mrs. Pete (Elizabeth) Clements, Mt. Dora, Fla.; three nieces, Mrs.. SWIFT, Dorothy Bailey, 74, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, December 25, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born on June 2, 1922 to the late William Harris and Lula Mae Dubose Bailey in Washington, D.C. She is survived by her husband, George Warren Swift, Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, George W. and Susan G. Swift, Mt. Solon; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Swift and John T. Patton, Fairfax; two grandchildren, Sarah and Hannah Patton, Fairfax. She worked with the Red Cross in blood donation and was also very active as a girl scout leader. God started proceedings to take Dorothy out of this veil of tears to reside with Him in a realm of grace, love, and joy. She had terminal lung cancer with six months to live. She and her husband looked upon this with dread of what lay ahead in the immediate future and with peace and joy in the assurance that God was waiting for her with outstretched hands. God has given us a measure of His grace and we have found it sufficient. We were and still are partakers of God's love and it is stronger than fear, sorrow, self-pity, grief, anger, etc. So let us praise God and use this occurrence to Glorify His name. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 1996, at Alleghany Baptist Church, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Harold Taylor officiating.
