Kim Morris scored 12 points and had seven steals Monday to lead Cave Spring's girls' basketball team over Avery County (N.C.) 66-51 in the opening round of the Tiger Holiday Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Lisa Bryan added 11 points and Catie Redick 10 for the undefeated (5-0) Knights, who steadily pulled away after leading 20-17 after the first quarter. Point guard Mandy Warsaw had seven assists.
Jenn Forbes scored 14 points to lead Avery County (5-3).
Boys
Reggie Grubb and Derrick Jackson scored four points apiece in overtime as Fort Chiswell outdistanced Rural Retreat 77-73 in Rural Retreat.
Todd Ridgaway's three-foot jumper with :03 remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime, but Rural Retreat (0-5) was outscored 14-10.
Heath Bralley paced Fort Chiswell with 22 points, while Grubb finished with 16 and Jackson chipped in 12.
Wayne Terry scored 22 points for the Indians, who also got 17 from Andrew Holliman and 16 from Ridgaway.
Bland 67, Shawsville 62: The Rockets saw most of a 19-point lead evaporate before holding off the Shawnees in a non-district game in Shawsville.
Shawsville (0-6) cut its deficit to three points in the fourth quarter, but poor free-throw shooting was the Shawnees' undoing. Shawsville converted only 17 of 33 shots at the line.
Bland (4-2) made 20 of 28 free throws. Lee Meadows led the Rockets with 21 points and John Thompson added 15.
Shawsville got 13 points each from William Scott and Simon Jones.
