Workshop will honor Dr. Martin Luther King

The Harrison Museum of African American Culture will present a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Workshop for children ages 6-12 on Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The workshop will include games, discussions and activities related to Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement.

The program is free, but preregistration is required.

Craft artist to speak at art museum

Quiltmaker Ellen Kochansky , whose work is included in the "White House Collection of Crafts," will present a gallery talk on Jan. 10 from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Art Museum of Western Virginia.

Kochansky will discuss the White House artists and their unique way of living and creating.

The talk will take place in the second-floor galleries and is free.

Exchange program seeks representative

ASSE International Student Exchange Program needs an area representative to assist in promoting and administering its foreign exchange programs.

Representatives will interview families interested in hosting students. ASSE provides training and reimbursement for time and expenses.

'Wrinkle in Time' author to appear in Bristol

Madeleine L'Engle, author of "A Wrinkle in Time" and many other works for children and adults, will autograph books Feb. 6-7 at St. Anne's School in Bristol.

L'Engle, winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, will sign books from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 at St. Anne's Catholic Church.

She will also be honored at a luncheon on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. in the church commons. The cost of the luncheon is $10.

Jazz great to play at Mardi Gras event

Jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd will perform with his trio at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center on Feb. 1 as part of the Art Museum of Western Virginia's Mardi Gras celebration.

The event will start at 7 p.m. with a buffet dinner and music by the Star City Swing Band. The Charlie Byrd Trio takes the stage at 9 p.m., with food and music continuing until 10:30 p.m.

The Mardi Gras celebration, sponsored by WVTF Public Radio and the Hotel Roanoke, will help raise funds for programs at the museum.

Smithsonian official to speak on railroads

William Withuhn , curator of transportation at the Smithsonian Institute, will speak at the Virginia Museum of Transportation's Shenandoah Division Conference Room on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.

His lecture is entitled "People and Railroads - and the Building of America."

The lecture is part of the museum's 1997 Transportation Heritage Informative Series.

Roanoke Ballet Theatre will hold auditions

The Roanoke Ballet Theatre will hold auditions for its dance company and apprentice company Jan. 11 at its Jefferson Center studio.

Ballet auditions will be 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and modern auditions will take place 12:30-1:30 p.m. Dancers may audition in both styles.

Ages 12 and up may audition for the dance company and ages 9-12 may audition for the apprentice company.
