The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved four-laning U.S. 58 from Patrick County to Carroll County.
The 36-mile road from Stuart to Hillsville will have two 12-foot lanes in each direction with a 40-foot grassed median.
The wider road will generally follow the existing route, although some changes will be made based on comments at public hearings on the project. These include reducing the impact on the Tri-Area Health Clinic in Carroll County by moving that segment north; moving south in the area of Fairview Presbyterian Church of Hillsville; and narrowing the median near Big Reed Island Creek in Carroll to avoid a cemetery.
The project will start with survey and design work. Public hearings on specific plans will be held when a draft design is ready. The project is part of a plan to four-lane U.S. 58 across southern Virginia, from Lee County to Virginia Beach.
