LIBERTY ROUTS STAUNTON RIVER

Liberty wasted little time with Bedford County rival Staunton River on Friday night in Moneta.

Backing up their No.1 ranking in the sportswriters' Group AA poll, the Minutemen rolled to an 82-58 Seminole District romp.

Liberty (14-1 overall, 9-0 district) broke open the game by outscoring the Golden Eagles 25-13 in the second quarter. Staunton River (6-11, 3-6) never got closer than 17 in the second half.

Raymond Arrington had 15 points to lead 12 Liberty scorers. Rick Wright contributed 12 and Rodney Morris added 11.

Eric Nichols had 12 points and Adam Johnson 10 for Staunton River.

In other games:

Magna Vista 67, Laurel Park 65, OT: Markus Hairston's layup with five seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Warriors over the Lancers in a Piedmont District matchup in Ridgeway.

Magna Vista, ranked fifth in the Group AA poll, led 30-21 after holding Laurel Park to six points in the second quarter.

The Lancers' Eric Jones made a 3-pointer to force overtime, but Laurel Park (10-5, 2-4) missed a shot at the buzzer after Hairston's layup. Jones finished with seven points, while Jeff Slade had 19.

Hairston finished with 14 points for Magna Vista (12-3, 6-0). Landa Martin scored 16.

Alleghany 64, Lord Botetourt 56: Casey Burks scored 21 points as the Moutaineers (4-12, 2-8) withstood a fourth-quarter surge by the Cavaliers (9-6, 4-6) to win a Blue Ridge District matchup in Low Moor.

Burks hit 10 of his 12 free-throw attempts to help Alleghany, and Travis Davis scored eight of his 17 points in the third quarter to open a 45-26 lead going into the final period.

Michael Yates led the Cavaliers with 15 points.

Glenvar 57, Radford 55: Chris Evans hit a short jumper with 13 seconds left to propel the Highlanders to a Three Rivers District victory over the Bobcats in Radford.

The Bobcats tied the score at 55 with 20 seconds to play on a 3-pointer by Adam Artrip. The Highlanders quickly got the ball to Evans, who combined with Josh Williamson to score all of Glenvar's fourth-quarter points.

Radford had one final opportunity, but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Williamson led the Highlanders (7-9, 4-1) with 26 points and Evans scored 20.

Tony Hash scored 13, and Artrip and John Robertson each had 11 for the Bobcats (8-5, 3-2).

Martinsville 62, Bassett 56: Leander Preston scored 22 points as the Bulldogs rallied for a Piedmont District victory over the Bengals in Bassett.

The Bengals (5-11, 2-4) led by as many as 14 points during the second quarter, but a second-half turnaround put Martinsville (10-6, 5-1) on top. Kelsey Green contributed 15 points for the Bulldogs

Andre Fuller led Bassett with 17 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 64, Patrick County 60: The Indians held off the Cougars' Corey Reynolds in the fourth quarter to preserve a Piedmont District victory in Collinsville.

Fieldale-Collinsville (6-10, 2-4) held a 57-47 advantage with four minutes to play, but Reynolds sparked a Patrick County rally. Reynolds, who scored 12 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, converted a four-point play with 2:33 left to pull the Cougars to 58-57.

That is as close as Patrick County (6-9, 1-5) would get, as Marco Taylor hit a layup to put the Indians back up by three.

Lamont Perkins led Fieldale-Collinsville with 17 points, and Taylor added 11.

Highland 80, James River 66: The Rams rolled to a 16-point lead and barely looked back en route to a Pioneer District victory over the Knights in Monterey.

Highland (11-2, 3-2) saw its lead cut to three in the third quarter, but Bryan Werner went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to help the state's eighth-ranked Group A team pull away for good. Werner had a game-high 29 points and Jacob Hull scored 20 for Highland.

James River (5-9, 1-3) had three scorers in double figures. Joey Ingram scored 19, Quincy Springs 14 and Travis Blankenship 12.

Grayson County 70, Narrows 64: The Blue Devils staved off a late run by the Green Wave to score a Mountain Empire District victory in Narrows.

Five of the six players who scored for Grayson County (10-4, 4-1) finished in double figures. The Blue Devils took command by outscoring the hosts 27-10 in the second quarter.

Jason Mullins had a game-high 18 points for Narrows (7-6, 3-4), but missed two potential tying 3-pointers in the final seconds.

Rocky Gap 64, Fort Chiswell 62: Kenny Shrader converted an offensive rebound with three seconds left as the Eagles edged the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game in Fort Chiswell.

Shrader finished with a game-high 23 points. Matthew and Adam Akers finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Rocky Gap (4-12, 2-6).

Jason Porter had a double-double for Fort Chiswell (7-7, 3-3), with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Derrick Jackson added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Galax 70, Pocahontas 61: B.B. Brown scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Maroon Tide (9-6, 6-1) past the Indians (1-10, 1-7) in a Mountain Empire District game in Galax.

Michael Shumate added 17 points and Nate Noel had 15 points and seven assists. Galax was able to hold on despite going 17-for-38 from the free-throw line.

David Murphy led Pocahontas with 21 points.

Floyd County 83, Shawsville 46: Jason Dalton had 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Buffaloes cruised to a Three Rivers District victory in Shawsville.

Floyd County led 35-11 after one quarter and never was threatened. Derek Saunders added 13 points and Justin Lucas had 12 for the Buffaloes.

Shawsville got 18 points from Simon Jones.

Parry McCluer 70, Covington 45: David Coleman scored 17 points and Mike Decker added 15 as the Fighting Blues remained undefeated with a victory over the Cougars in Buena Vista.

Parry McCluer (16-0, 6-0), ranked second in the state sportswriters' Group A poll, took a 38-20 halftime lead, holding Covington to eight points in the second quarter.

Tracy Walker was the bright spot for Covington (5-9, 2-3), scoring 11 points.

Bath County 74, Craig County 51: Adam Grist scored 29 points and made seven 3-pointers to spark the Chargers to a Pioneer District victory in Hot Springs.

Grist scored 16 points in first half as Bath County (8-5, 2-1) went up 34-19. Travis McGlothlin added 13 points overall for the Chargers.

Dewayne Crawford scored 16 points to lead Craig County (1-9, 0-5). Mike Fisher added 12.

Giles 72, Auburn 53: The Eagles went cold in the second half, and the Spartans, coincidentally, got hot. Giles won the Three Rivers District matchup in Riner, thanks to a 10-0 spree that began with 1:58 gone in the fourth quarter.

Auburn led until the last few seconds of the first half. Giles (8-8, 3-4) made 21 of 30 free throws and Auburn (3-12, 1-5) made 12 of 25.

Landon Cassidy led the Spartans with 18 points, Adam Jones had 17 and Robbie Claytor added 15.

Auburn got 17 from Adam Loveday and 15 from Josh Vaughn.

Covington Boys' Home 77, Mount Carmel (W.Va.) Christian 60: Mike White scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Indians (7-8) past Mount Carmel Christian (8-7) in a non-district game in Covington.

Chris Hampton added 14 points and nine rebounds for Covington Boys' Home. Freddy Portillo and Gabriel Ross had 11 points each.

Daniel Haywood scored a game-high 25 points for Mount Carmel Christian.

Northside 77, Rockbridge County 69: The Vikings used their quickness to turn back the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District game in Lexington.

Daryl Holmes had 20 points and Grey Perdue added 16 to lead Northside, which took control with a spurt to start the fourth quarter.

Rockbridge County got 21 points from Ricky Wright and 14 from James Hines.

Gateway Christian 66, Dayspring 17: Andrew Smith scored 13 points as the Crusaders (8-6) cruised past Dayspring in a non-district game in Blacksburg.

Chris Kirtner added 12, Joe Graham 11 and Jake Wimmer 10 for Gateway Christian.

Christian Horner led Dayspring with seven points.

Girls

Roanoke Catholic 46, Carlisle 42: The Celtics (3-14) held the Chiefs (3-10) to one possession in the final 2:50 to build on a one-point lead and win in Martinsville.

Brooke Holyfield scored 33 of Carlisle's points, including 26 of its 28 through three quarters, but it wasn't enough.

Whitney Cummings scored 12 points for Roanoke Catholic.
