AUSTIN, Era McGhee, 97, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, February 1, 1997 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of O. C. Austin and was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Austin is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, O.C. Jr. and Mary Austin, Orange Park, Fla., Grover and Evelyn Austin, Roanoke; daughters and sons-in-laws, Lucile and Jack Minter, Roanoke, Iris and Forest Lloyd, Vinton; a special friend and neighbor, Mrs. Hazel Hopkins; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. COLLINS, Lillie Loraine, 74, of Pembroke, died Saturday, February 1, 1997, in a Princeton, W.Va., hospital following a long illness. Born in Giles County, she was a daughter of the late William and Laura Gillespie Merrix. She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church and was retired from VPI&SU. She was preceded in death by a son, William Haven Collins; a grandson, Darren Perdue; two brothers, William and Raleigh Merrix, and a sister, Lettie Mahoney. Surviving are her husband, Haven Collins; sons and daughters-in-law, Jackie and Patty Collins of Pembroke, Danny and Ginger Collins of Pearisburg and Randy Collins of Pembroke; daughters, Barbara Perdue of Pearisburg and Brenda Mason of Modoc, S.C.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dot Martin of Pembroke and Pat Collins of Goldbond, and one brother, Doil Lee Merrix of Maybrook. DUDDING, Carl Stull, (``Sam""), 69, of Eagle Rock, died Friday night, January 31, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth F. Dudding of Eagle Rock; son and daughter-in-law, Carl Michael (``Mike"") and Kathy Dudding of Eagle Rock; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marjorie and Jerry Dupree of Buchanan, and Margaret and Earl Huffman of Madison Heights, and a sist er-in-law, Louise C. FLEMING, Vivian Parkey, 92, of Princeton, W. Va., died Friday, January 31, 1997 in a Princeton hospital. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Joel and Lizzie Bowling Haden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Barney Ray Parkey, Sr., and her second husband, Emory ``Bub'' Fleming, two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include three sons, Barney Ray Parkey, Jr. and his wife, Patty of Princeton, James K. Parkey and his wife, Kate of Williamsburg, Jack Lee Parkey, Germantown, Tenn.; one daughter, Shirley Ann Parkey Skewes, Blacksburg; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. FOWLER, William Ray, Sr., (``Papa''), 67, of Roanoke, passed away at his home Saturday, February 1, 1997. He was a member of First Church of the Brethren. He was employed by Wholesale Enterprises. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra F. McConaghie. He is survived by his wife, Doris R. Fowler; his granddaughter, Erin McConaghie of whom he was guardian. Also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Doug Board; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Becky Fowler; granddaughters, Amy Board, Jennifer and Nicole Fowler; two brothers, Stewart Fowler, Princeton, W. GEE, George M., 68, of Hardy, passed away Friday evening, January 31, 1997. He was the CEO of H&S Construction Company, and had been with the firm since 1960. Prior to that, he had been with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Mr. Gee was preceded in death by his parents, George L. and Lorraine Gee, his wife, Helen S. Gee, and a son, Ronald V. Gee. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie S. Smyth-Gee; three sons, Robert Michael Gee, Alpharetta, Ga., William D. Gee, Hardy, Jeffrey S. Gee, Roanoke; a daughter, Joy G. Spencer, Moneta; four grandchildren, Brennan Gee, Corey Gee, Jessica Gee, George Michael Gee; a sister, Janet Tolley, Roswell, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Emilyn S. Bellavia, Bonnie S. Mazzoli, Jayne S. Ritz; a stepson, James S. Smyth. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Laney P. Mofield officiating. GLASS, Charles J., known as Chuck to his friends, age 62, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, February 1, 1997 in a Roanoke hospital. Known as a warm, loving and generous man, his family extended to all whom he met. He was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge #163, and St. Andrew's Catholic Church. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U. S. Navy as a Naval Pilot. Later, he started an early career playing football in the Navy and with a semi-pro team. He retired as a Regional Manager of Trustmark Life Insurance Company. His greatest enjoyment in life was his family. Surviving are his loving wife of 36 years, Shirley Brodfuerhrer Glass; his children and their spouses, John H. Glass, Charles J. (Chas) Glass, Laura M. Glass, Roselyn M. James, Daniel J. Glass, Richard J. Glass, James R. Glass, Timothy J. Glass, and Christopher J. (CC) Glass; especially loved by their PawPaw, are his grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Jason, Heather, Dustin, Dylan, Tyler, Michael, Darin, Tanner, and Marley. The funeral mass will be celebrated 12 noon Tuesday, February 4, 1997 from St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Roanoke. The Rev. Father Randy Rule will officiate. GRANT, Ruth Shaver, 83, of Bent Mountain, died Friday, January 31, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Vester Grant, and was a member of Mount Union Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Alta Jean and Harry Bibb of Leesburg; a granddaughter, Cynthia Peszka of Richmond, and two sisters, Cassie Fralin of Bent Mountain and Mable Grant of Roanoke. GREEN, Dr. Mark A., 53, of Churchville, Md., formerly of Buena Vista, Va., died Friday, January 31, 1997 at his home. He was born on October 31, 1943, the son of the late Ira and Lorene Green. Mark grew up in Buena Vista and graduated from Parry McCluer High School in 1962. He received his B.S. and Masters degrees from the University of Richmond. Dr. Green received his PH. D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Medical College of Virginia. In 1976, Dr. Green joined Wyeth Laboratories, Inc. in Great Valley, Pa where he served as Director of Toxicology from 1981 until 1988. In 1988, Dr. Green joined Nova Pharmaccutical Corporation in Baltimore, Md where he was employed as Director of the Drug Safety Evaluation Section. In January 1966, Dr. Green was named President of Oread BioSafety Inc. in Farmington, Ct., where he served until his death. Dr. Green is survived and greatly missed by his wife, Bunny; his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Humphries of Buena Vista; two sisters, Ms Iris Green and Ms Janie Hughes both of Roanoke; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Craun of Lexington; five nieces and nephews and one great nephew; and numerous friends and colleagues. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 3, 1997 at the St. John's United Methodist Church, Buena Vista with the Rev. Edward H. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends on Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lomax Funeral Home, Buena Vista.
HANCOCK, Gary Wayne, 45, of Roanoke, died Friday, January 31, 1997, in a local hospital. HENDERSON, Julian E., (``Dude""), 86, of Blacksburg, died Friday, January 31, 1997, at Greenwood Assisted Living Blacksburg. He wa s born in Montgomery County on July 27, 1910, to the late Giles Harrison and Eatta Shaver Henderson. He was a member of the Local 491 Union of Plumbers and Steam Fitters in Roanoke, and a member of the Blacksburg Fish and Game Commission for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Jennette Henderson. Surviving are three sisters, Minnie H. Elliott, Virginia H. Gibson and Ora Mae H. Daugherty, all of Christiansburg; one brother, Rudolph (``Tete'') Henderson, Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 3, 1997, at 11 a.m., at The First Church of God, Blacksburg. She was a Quality Control worker for Coca-Cola Company and retired in 1987 after 29 years of service. Survivors include her husband, James W. Landsdown; sons, Jerome and Jeffrey Landsdown; granddaughters, Jessica and Jennifer Landsdown; brothers, John P. Overstreet, Richard Overstreet and Aaron F. Overstreet; sisters, Georgie Boothe, Era Poisson, Gladys Johnston, Leona English and Betty O. Martin; mother-in-law, Alice Landsdown; sister-in-law, Philis Terry, and several nieces and nephews who were so very special to her. PARCELL, Mary Cowan, 101, of Rich Creek, died Thursday, January 30, 1997 in Charleston, W. Va. She was born in Tazewell County on March 16, 1895 and was the daughter of the late Samuel Wesley and Mary Margaret Leedy Cowan. Mrs. Parcell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clinton Parcell, and a son, Garland Stamey. She was a member of the Rich Creek United Methodist Church. PATE, Grover Jr., 58, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 1, 1997. Mr. Pate was a member of Tanglewood Baptist Church. He was a truck driver for Consolidated Freight Ways. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Dreama Pratt, Rural Retreat; five daughters, Marion and Gene Griffin, San Antonio, Texas, Janet Pratt, Rich Valley, Eleanor and Dick Wassum, Independence, Linda and John Diyorio, Wytheville, Jane and Charlie Clark, Rich Valley; nine grandsons; two granddaughters; three great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Royston was born August 5, 1907, in Clark County, and was the daughter of the late Charles and Valley Fritts. Mrs. Royston was a member of the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, and she is survived by her husband, R. W. Royston of Lexington. Also surviving is a niece, Sidney S. Elgin of Oakton.
