Virginia midfielder Mike Fisher was selected by the Tampa Bay Mutiny with the second overall pick in the Major League Soccer collegiate draft.
Fisher, a two-time Hermann Trophy winner from Batavia, Ill., led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring with 11 goals and 20 assists. He is Virginia's all-time leader in points (167) and assists (55) and is second in goals (56).
UCLA's Tahj Jakins was taken by the Colorado Rapids with the first pick. Fisher is the second Cavalier to be taken in the top three by the second-year MLS. Brandon Pollard was the third pick of the Dallas Burn last season.
* Patrick County crowned three individual champions and earned the team title at the Piedmont District wrestling meet at Magna Vista High School on Saturday.
Chad Clark (112 pounds), Jeff Hamm (130) and David Morrison (160) won individual titles for the Cougars.
Patrick County finished with 169.5 points to beat Magna Vista (146), Bassett (139.5), Laurel Park (121), Martinsville (97) and Fieldale-Collinsville (28) for the team championship.
Other individual winners were: Wayne Milam of Bassett (103); Darin Dickenson of Magna Vista (119); Rick Hedgecock of Magna Vista (125); Waylon Ryder of Magna Vista (135); James Wells of Martinsville (140); Cory Lanier of Laurel Park (145); Jeff Shivley of Bassett (152); Anthony Lanier of Laurel Park (171); Jason Barnes of Bassett (189); Roy Sanchez of Bassett (215); and John Miller of Bassett (275).
* Staunton River's Danny Thomas, an All-Timesland wrestler and Region III champion last year as a junior 135-pounder, won the 140-pound title in the Seminole District wrestling tournament to return to this week's Region III tournament Saturday in Christiansburg.
Thomas decisioned Brian Crawford of Brookville 11-3. He has lost only one match this season in the championship round of the Big Orange tournament, but that opponent will not be in the Region III tournament.
Brookville took the team championship with ease, scoring 235 points and sending 13 of its 14 wrestlers to the Region III tournament.
Liberty's Gary Dooley (103) was the only other Timesland champion in the tournament as he pinned Brookville's Derek Simons in 1:05.
* Six William Byrd wrestlers won individual championships as the Terriers cruised to the team title in the Blue Ridge District tournament Saturday in Lexington.
Byrd finished with 221.5 points to easily outdistance second-place Christiansburg, which had 176 points. Lord Botetourt was third with 155, followed by Northside with 142.5, Salem and Alleghany with 62, Rockbridge County with 42 and Blacksburg with 20.
William Byrd's Corey Walker (112), Randall Sell (119), Clay Proctor (125), Ben O'Baugh (130), Ben Jones (160) and Timmy Boothe (215) captured titles. Northside wrestlers Byron Roop (135) and Drew Cook (145) won championships, while Salem's James Giarla won at 189 and Lord Botetourt's Mike Thompson won at 275.
* Luke Hellkamp posted a shutout and Brad Collins and Danny Karbassiyoon scored goals as the Roanoke Star Under-12 boys' soccer team beat the Greensboro Soccer Club Sonics 2-0 to win its division in the St. Valentine Indoor Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
The U-14 Roanoke Star boys finished second in their division with a 3-1 record. Stephen Platt scored four goals to lead the U-14 team.
The Roanoke Star U-11 girls won the Kingsport (Tenn.) Indoor Classic Invitational with a 3-0 record in the round-robin event.
* K.J. Hippensteel, 16, of Roanoke advanced to the semifinals of the United States Tennis Association Mid-Atlantic Regional at Newport News. Hippensteel, the sixth seed playing in the 18-year-old division, defeated No.4 Ryan Davidson of Virginia Beach 6-3, 6-3.
