ATWELL, Ruth Bernard, 86, of Crandon, died Monday, February 3, 1997, in the Kegley Manor in Bastian. She was the daughter of the late John and Eula Gordon Atwell, and was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin Cadet Atwell; two sons; two grandchildren; and a sister. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Eleanor Atwell of Bland; a sister, Louise B. Bird of Bland; a brother, Paul Bernard of Bland. Two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at 3 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Newberry Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of arrangements.

BERGER, Margie Davis, (``Mrs. Tom""), of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord on Sunday afternoon, February 2, 1997. She was the daughter of the late Leon and Elizabeth Davis. Mrs. Berger was a retired teacher from Roanoke City Schools, a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Electa Chapter #33. Surviving are her husband of 26 years (who knew her as ``My Sweet Margie""), Tom Berger; an aunt and uncle and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Pastor William B. Ramey Jr., Rev. Sidney Willis, and Rev. Danny Dugan officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer's Disease, Roanoke-Salem Chapter ADRDA (P.O. 5014, Roanoke, VA 24012). BROOKMAN, Opal G., 91, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, February 3, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Brookman, several brothers, and a sister. She is survived by a daughter, Martha B. Janney, Roanoke; grandchildren, Betty Lou Lefler of Alaska, Henry Farmer of Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Rita and Lauree; sisters, Isabelle Blankenship, Salem, Stella Anderson of Tennessee; brothers, Burman Grantham of Pulaski and Thomas Grantham of Texas. BURNOP, Carl C., 81, of Marion, died Monday, February 3, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va. He is survived by is wife, Faye Warren Burnop of Marion, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and William Jones of Kiawah Island, South Carolina; two sisters, Helen Harris of Marion, Va. and Elva Greer of Roc k Falls, Illinois; one brother, Lee Burnop of Marion, Va.; two grandchildren, Chad H. Groseclose and Jason G. Groseclose, both of Charleston, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Weston B. Gurhrie officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Va. EDWARDS, Thelma Johnson, 85, of Gretna, died Monday, February 3, 1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, Colbert-Moran Funeral Chapel, Gretna.

ESTUS, Dorothy Wilson, 88, widow of Leonard C. Estus of Lawrence, Kan., died on the evening of Wednesday, January 29, 1997, in San Diego, Calif. She was born Dorothy Cordelia Wilson, second daughter of Emma A. Leeper and Royden W. Wilson of Columbus, Kan. on November 28, 1908. Educated in the public schools of Columbus, she attended the University of Kansas, where she was inducted into the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and Pittsburg State College, where she studied childhood education. She married Leonard Charles Estus, also of Columbus, on September 28, 1929. From 1951 until 1966 Mrs. Estus made her home in Radford, where her husband was safety superintendent for Hercules at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Mr. Estus preceded her in death on August 18, 1993. Dorothy Estus was active in the P.E.O. sisterhood all her adult life, becoming a ``golden girl'' in 1984 and continuing her service to that sorority for 12 more years. She was an accomplished seamstress and designed children's clothes. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, Kan., where she resided until the death of her husband. Since that date she has made her home in San Diego. Mrs. Estus leaves two sons, Charles W. Estus Sr. of Jefferson, Mass. and Robert W. Estus Sr. of San Diego; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She will be buried in Columbus, Kan. at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 8. Funeral arrangements are being made by Murdock Funeral Home in Columbus. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, should be made in her name to Cotty College, Nevada, Mo.

GLASS, Charles J., passed away Saturday, February 1, 1997 . The funeral mass will be 12 noon Tuesday from St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Roanoke.

HARRISON, George M., 83, of Salem, passed away Monday, February 3, 1997. He served in the US Army during World War II and retired from the N&W Railway. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn S. Harrison. Surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude and Barbara Harrison, Elmer and Rebecca Kingery, Harlie and Ruth Kingery; si sters and brothers-in-law, Christine and Raymond Sexton, Irene and Fleming Vickers; brother-in-law, Johnny Kingery; sister-in-law, Leona Harrison; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted 12 noon Wednesday, February 5, 1997 at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Fred DeVan officiating. JACKSON, Shirley Chappel Clark, 89, of Buena Vista, Ga., died Saturday, February 1, 1997, at St. Francis Hospital. Mrs. Jackson was born August 20, 1907 in Richmond, daughter of the late Dr. James Malcolm and Mary Crowder Chappel. She was a Catholic and a homemaker. S he and her first husband, Claude C. Clark, reared three children, Claude C. Clark Jr. of Wyalusing, Pa. and the late Dorothy C. Komer and Julia C. Peet of Lancaster, Pa. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Free Clark, and a son, Michael Clark. She is survived by her son, William G. Clark of Buena Vista, Ga.; and grandchildren, Nancy Marie Moffett of Stonington, Ill., Diana Lynn Jones of Buena Vista, Ga., Kenny Clark of Virginia, and Mike Clark of Burkeville; 12 great-grandchildren. KENDALL, Geneva L., of Gaithersburg, Md., died Sunday, February 2, 1997. She was the beloved wife of James M. Kendall and the mother of Theodore F. Blackwelder M.D. of Phoenix, Ariz. and Dr. David L. Blackwelder of Wilmington, Del. In addition to her husband and children, Mrs. Kendall is survived by four grandchildren and a sister of S. Lewis Lionberger of Roanoke, Va. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Febru ary 6, 1997 at Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol Street, Washington, D.C. LEWIS, Lucille Allen, 91, of Roanoke, a retired teacher, died Sunday, February 2, 1997. A memorial service will be held Thursday evening, February 6, 1997, at Loudon Avenue Christian Church. Time to be announced.

MESROBIAN, Evelyn Paynter, 83, of Traverse City, Mich., died Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born May 12, 1913 in Clifton Forge, the daughter of the late Earl and Susan Paynter. On March 21, 1938, she married James N. Mesrobian in St. Louis, Mo., who preceded her in death. Mrs. Mesrobian was a 1931 graduate of the Clifton Forge High School in Virginia. She graduated as a registered nurse from the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She lived in Ypsilanti from 1970 until 1996, when she moved to Traverse City. She researched, wrote and published a family history book for the Mesrobians and Paynters, dating back to the mid 1700's. Mrs. Mesrobian was a past president of the General Federated Womens Club and a member of the Westgate Hills, Pa. Womens' Club. She was Paymaster General of the Society of the Descendents of Valley Forge and reviewed the troops at the Valley Forge Military Academy. One of her greatest accomplishments was her membership as Chairwoman of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was invited for tea at the White House by Mrs. George Bush. She also did volunteer work for the University of Michigan Hospital, the Ypsilanti Blood Bank and the Cancer Society. She is survived by three children, Sandra (Curt) Fordyce of Clinton, Mich., Jane Selin of Westlake Village, Calif., and James A. (Susan) Mesrobian of Elk Rapids, Mich; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; one brother, William Paynter of Norfolk. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Paynter Jr. and Orville Paynter. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 4, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Janowiak Funeral Home, Geer-Logan Chapel, with Rev. Richard Dake of the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of service.

MUNDY, Harry Bell, 72, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, February 1, 1997. Mr. Mundy was born in Buchanan, Va. on November 13, 1924 and was a son of the late Roy Clinton Mundy Sr. and Mary Viola Campber Mundy. Mr. Mundy was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead, Va. and was a veteran of WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post 68 of Narrows and of the V.F.W. Post 6000 of Narrows, Va. He retired from the railroad having worked for the Fruit Growers Express Co. Mr. Mundy was preceded in death by a brother, R. C. Mundy Jr. and his wife, Irene Craft Mundy. Mr. Mundy is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Linda Mundy of Cinnaminson, N.J.; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Daniel Lloyd of Pennsanken, N.J.; one brother, Marvin R. Mundy of Chesterfield, Va.; three sisters, Mildred Montgomery of Narrows, Betty Sexton of Buchanan, and Ruby Matthews of Deltona, Fla.; three grandchildren, Roy Clinton Mundy III and Marcus Mundy of Cinnaminson, N.J., and Christine Irene Louise Lloyd of Pennsanken, N.J. PRESTON, Richard John, 82, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nannie L. Hobson Preston; four sons, John (Violeta) Preston, Jr., Rev. Harold (Darlene) Preston, William (Elizabeth) Preston, Manuel L. Preston, all of Roanoke; seven daughters, Geneva Brown, Gracie Crowder, Ruby Gray, Helen (Herman) Johnson, Shirlene (William) Hopson, Sylvia (Robert) Payne, Deloise A. RUSSELL, Hubert Woodrow, 80, of the 3600 block of Pine Road, Portsmouth, died Sunday, February 2, 1997, in a local nursing home. He was a retired programmer with Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlsie Margaret Russell, and was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was a native of Portsmouth and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He is survived by one son, Frederick L. Russell of Richmond; one sister, Virginia Wetherbee of South Hill; one brother, Marvin J. Russell of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Travis Lee Russell and Amy Leigh Russell. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. TURNER, Lucile Hannabass, of Friends Homes West, Greensboro, N.C., died Sunday, February 2, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel. Lucile was a graduate of National Business College and the first woman officer of First Home Federal Savings and Loan. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, and a former member of Quota International. Lucile is survived by her daughters, Pamela T. Roberts of Kernersville, N.C. and Diane T. Shields of Greensboro. She is also survived by her sister, Geraldine H. Doherty of Logandale, Nev.; and by her grandson, Brian D. Roberts of Kernersville, N.C. WEEKS, Perry Elwood Sr., 60, of 457 Dale Ave., Vinton, passed away Monday, February 3, 1997, at his residence. He was employed by I. N. McNeil Roofing & Sheet Metal for over 30 years.
