COOPER, William M., (``Buster""), 78, of Boones Mill, died Tuesday, February 4, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. He was a son of the late Dennis and Sally Cooper and was also preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Cooper. Surviving are his wife, Beulah V. Cooper; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Randy Delancy; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Dale and Sandra Cooper, Donald and Ella Cooper, David and Barbara Cooper, Daniel Cooper; nine grandchildren, Marcy Lynn, Aaron, Willie, Nathan, Scott, Jason, Sherrie, Mandy, Billy Dale; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Dalton, and Kyle; two sisters, Verda May Agee and Frances Blankenship. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Custer Family Cemetery with Rev. Eddie Peters officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the Callaway Rescue Squad. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

DILLOW, Roxanna Caldwell, (``Nancy''), 74, of Blacksburg, died Monday, February 3, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was born on February 25, 1922 in Montgomery County to the late Walter H. and Violet Bell Songer Caldwell. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray P. Caldwell, and her second husband, Robert M. Dillow. She was a long-time member of the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Ella Josie Cromer, Blacksburg, Mary and Clyde Ballinger Jr., and Barbara and Jack Ballinger, all of Christiansburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, Thurman and Marie Caldwell, Shawsville, Marvin and Selena Caldwell, Riner, Jimmy and Janice Caldwell, and William and Donna Caldwell, all of Christiansburg; a special son, Joseph R. Cruff, Pulaski; 15 grandchildren, Thurman E. Caldwell and Kimberly Renee Mullins, Wanda Brizendine, Billy Brizendine Jr., Laura Jarrell, Angela Brizendine, Donnie and John Cromer, Melissa Williams, Michelle Caldwell, Rachel Caldwell, Jennifer Ballinger, William Paul and Jason Caldwell, and Bucky Cruff; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith Duncan, Stella Sult, Dorothy Phipps, Bessie and Bill Cook, all of Blacksburg, and Bernice Martin, Christiansburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Houston and Virginia Caldwell, Howard Caldwell, all of Blacksburg; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Stanley Caldwell and Dorance Wingo, both of Blacksburg; one aunt, Deanie Hypes, Blacksburg; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 6, 1997, at the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church (former location at 1030 Harless Street) with the Rev. David Hurd and Re v. FRIER, Kathleen Lee Hall, 85, of Salem, died Tuesday in a Salem hospital. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Willard and Ruth Hall of Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Patty H. and Wayne Garman of Waynesboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph R. and Iva Lee of Catawba; four grandchildren, Donald W. Garman of Galax, Randall C. Garman of Waynesboro, Elizabeth Hall Barger of Matthews, N.C., and James Brian Hall of Roan oke, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 1997, at the Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. R. C. Wagner officiating. Interment will be at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. HALLECK, Charles Augustus, (``Gus''), 77, of 1405 Richmond St., Selma, died Monday, February 3, 1997, at the Columbia Alleghany Regional Hospital. He was born in Selma on March 31, 1919, son of the late Charles Augustus and Viola Simpson Halleck. He was retired from Dabney Lancaster Community College, a member of the Selma Epworth United Methodist Church, member of the Selma Volunteer Fire Department, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. ``Gus'' was loved by all who knew him. He never met a stranger, gave to many in need and always had a smile on his face and a hand extended. He will be missed by many who loved him, but not forgotten by the good friends and family he leaves behind with many fond memories. He is survived by three nieces, Gene and Claryce Dame of Selma, Massie and Patricia Liptrap of High Point, N.C., Donald and Vickie Saville of Eagle Rock; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wiley Frank Halleck, Alangnon Lyle Halleck, and John Patrick Halleck; three sisters, Hattie Mae Curtis, Katherine Marguerite Halleck, Dorothy Lillian Grove Pursley. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, with Rev. Robert A. McRae, assisted by Rev. Luther Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow. Memorial gifts may be made in his name to the Dabney Lancaster Community College Education Fund or the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.

KIMBLETON, Harry Donald Sr., 73, of Parrott, died Tuesday, February 4, 1997, in a Radford hospital. He was a retired employee of Hercules Inc. Surviving are his wife, Lola Cressell Kimbleton, Parrott; his son and daughter-in-law, Harry D. and Georgeanna Kimbleton, Radford; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra K. and Rev. J. Mark Munsey of Mischwaka, Ind.; a brother, Howard C. Kimbleton; three sisters, Helen K. Hamblin, Nancy K. Haley, and Ruth K. Whitlock, all of Parrott; three grandsons, Chad Munsey, Chris Munsey, and Anthony Kimbleton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Parrott Church of God with Rev. William O. Myers officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home.

LEWIS, Lucille Allen, 91, of Our Lady of the Valley in Roanoke, a retired teacher, died Sunday, February 2, 1997, after a long illness. Mrs. Lewis was a native of Washington, D.C., a graduate of Dunbar High School and Miner Normal Teachers College. She taught for 41 years in the District of Columbia school system, retiring in 1964. She was an accomplished musician who played the organ and piano for several choirs at Metropolitan Baptist Church. After retirement, she pursued a longtime interest in art and studied at the Corcoran Gallery. She was an active volunteer for several organizations, including Northwest Settlement House, Meals on Wheels and directed choirs for three senior citizen centers, all in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Lewis relocated to Roanoke in 1986. Her husband, Attorney Jesse W. Lewis Sr., died in 1973. She is survived by two sons, Jesse W. Lewis, Jr. of Stamford, Conn., Peter A. Lewis of Copper Hill; a devoted daughter-in-law, Harriet Scruggs Lewis, and two grandsons, Peter Simon Lewis and John Russell Lewis, all of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Aideen Corr Lewis, and two granddaughters, Niamh Lucille Lewis and Deirdre Mary Lewis, all of County Derry, Ireland; a brother, George Walker Allen, and niece, Celestine Allen Birch of Washington, D.C. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 1997, at Loudon Avenue Christian Church, 730 Loudon Ave. N.W., Roanoke. The family wishes that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity/Roanoke Valley or the West End Center.

MITCHELL, William, a 25-year Manhattan Beach, Calif. resident, recently of Bishop, passed away Monday, Februa ry 3, 1997 in El Segundo. Born in Virginia August 18, 1922, Mr. Mitchell was 74. He served in the Navy as a Naval Aviator from 1942 to 1959, and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He worked as a Systems Engineer at Hughes Aircraft Space and Communication for over 24 years. He is survived by his sons, William (Debra) Mitchell of El Segundo, Robert (Lorrie) Mitchell of Bishop, Calif.; grandchildren, Curry Mitchell, Kelsey Mitchell, Rebekah Mitchell, and Aaron Mitchell, all of Bishop, Calif. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at White and Day's Manhattan Mortuary Chapel of the Good Shepherd. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 1997, at 2:30 p.m. in the Mortuary Chapel. Burial with military honors will be held Friday, February 7, at 1:45 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area #4, in Riverside, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local hospice in memory of Mr. Mitchell.

MOORE, William, (``David''), 27, of Buena Vista, died Monday, February 3, 1997. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, Lomax Funeral Home Chapel.

PARKER, Raymond Daniel, Sr. age 52 of Vinton passed away Tuesday, February 4, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Linda O. Parker; mother Maime Virginia Parker; children, Raymond Parker, Jr., Marie Parker, Lynn Parker; brother, Robert Lee Parker, Michael Anthony Parker. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 1997 at Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Holly O. Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. PETTIGREW, Edward Thomas, 95, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, February 4, 1997, in a Lynchburg hospital. He was a retired N&W employee. Born in Richmond on January 27, 1902, he was a son of the late Mary Virginia Queensbury and Archie Pettigrew. Surviving is one son, E. T. Pettigrew Jr. of Lynchburg. PRESTON, Richard J., 82, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 2, 1997. He was born in Bedford County to the late Richard and Mary Turner Preston. Mr. Preston was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during World War II. He retired from the City of Roanoke, Water Department. Funeral services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Faith and Hope Church of God in Christ. Elder John Washington will officiate with the interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

PUTBRESE, Marjorie Ione, 91, of Lex ington, died Monday, February 3, 1997, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was born on December 1, 1905 in Auburn, Iowa, a daughter of the late Herman F. Garnatz and Minnie Estelle Wiseman Garnatz. Mrs. Putbrese was formerly a school teacher and later administrator in a family business, Putbrese Seed and Implement Company in Auburn, Iowa. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband, Edward O. Putbrese; three sons, Charles E. Putbrese, Des Moines, Iowa, Keith E. Putbrese, McLean, and James L. Putbrese, Staunton; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Putbrese was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, February 7, 1997, at the Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Brian K. Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Auburn, Iowa. SAUNDERS, Charles Terry, 85, of Cloverdale, died Monday evening, February 3, 1997, after a long illness. He was the former owner of Peaks of Otter Orchard in Bedford County. He was an active member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Daleville, where he served on many committees including Board of Trustees, Administrative Council, United Methodist Men, and was chairman of the Building Committee when the present church was built. He was also a member of Boone Masonic Lodge #247 A.F.&A.M. Mr. Saunders was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Gillispie Saunders. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ramona S. and Terry N. Tolley of Roanoke, and Rebecca S. and Alan R. Collins of Vinton; a sister, Eunice S. Ketchie of Roseville, Calif., and four grandchildren, Brian Tolley, Lauren Tolley, Bradley Collins and Christopher Collins. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 1997, in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton, with Masonic rites conducted by Boone Masonic Lodge. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 6, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Daleville. The Rev. Dr. Gene M. Williams will officiate at both services. TATE, Carroll Nelson, 75, of Norton, died Tuesday, February 4, 1997, in Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home in Abingdon following a lengthy illness. Mr. Tate had been publisher of The Coalfield Progress in Norton from the mid 1960s until his retirement in 1989. He also was publisher of The Post in Big Stone Gap. He was publisher emeritus of both newspapers until his death. He also served as president of The Norton Press Inc. and Wise Printing Company of Big Stone Gap Inc. Active throughout the community, Mr. Tate's newspaper career spanned more than four decades during which time he served in numerous capacities at The Coalfield Progress, including editor, reporter, sports writer, advertising director and printing manager. Until his retirement, he wrote the well-known weekly sports prognosticating column, ``The Dope Bucket."" Born in Stonega coal camp outside Appalachia, Mr. Tate moved to Norton with his family at an early age and graduated from Norton High School. He was a member of the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1944. In that same year, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army and served as a personnel officer in the Philippines before returning to Norton and pursuing his newspaper career at The Coalfield Progress. For most of his professional career, Mr. Tate was an active member of the Virginia Press Association. He was elected VPA President in 1971. In addition to newspaper work, Mr. Tate involved himself in various community services. He was active in launching the Norton Industrial Development Corporation and the Norton Industrial Development Authority. At various times, he served on the boards of directors of Interstate Railroad System, First National Exchange Bank, Wise Appalachian Regional Hospital and Wise County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Tate was selected Wise County Chamber of Commerce 1989 Citizen of the Year. He also served on advisory boards for Dominion Bank and Norfolk Southern Corporation. Mr. Tate was a past president and life member of the Norton Kiwanis Club. He was a former deacon of Norton Presbyterian Church, and served as a deacon and elder at Gladeville Presbyterian Church in Wise. He was a life member of VFW Post #4301 in Norton. Throughout his life, Mr. Tate received numerous honors and commendations, including distinguished service awards from the Virginia High School League and the National Interscholastic Coaches Association. Mr. Tate was preceded in death by his father, Edward French Tate Sr.; his mothe r, Katherine E. Horton Tate Atkins; his stepfather, Presley Thornton Atkins; his brother, Edward French Tate Jr., and a sister, Betty Presley Atkins Thompson. Surviving are his wife, Robbie G. Tate of Norton; two daughters, Jenay Tate of Norton and Carol Robbie Tate of New York, N.Y.; a son, Michael Nelson Tate of Clintwood; a granddaughter, Hannah Grace Tate of Clintwood; a sister, Virginia Tate Taggart of Bristol, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, at Hagy Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hagy Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. George Aichel officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be conducted by Norton VFW Post #4301 and Wise DAV Chapter #56. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll N.
