DEPUTY INJURED IN SCUFFLE

A scuffle with a Christiansburg man landed a Montgomery County sheriff's deputy in the hospital Thursday morning.

Deputy Brad Roane suffered a minor injury to one of his hands after Lonnie E. Price fought with Roane and another officer as the men tried to arrest him on a traffic violation.

Police eventually arrested Price, 31, on the following charges: resisting arrest; assault and escape; destroying property; reckless driving; and driving after being declared a habitual offender. More charges are pending.

Sheriff Doug Marrs said Roane stopped Price for speeding in a school zone in front of Belview Elementary School on Peppers Ferry Road.

The deputy asked Price for his driver's license, but Price refused to give his real name and Social Security number, Marrs said.

Sgt. Dennis Rakes assisted Roane on the arrest. After Rakes' arrival, Price began arguing with the officers. Price swung a fist at Rakes, Marrs said, and ripped the officer's shirt. All three men fell to the ground as the officers tried to complete the arrest.

Marrs said Price also attempted to grab one of the officers' guns during the scuffle before he got away from the officers. More officers arrived and a police dog was used to track Price. Police found Price in a brush pile on the eastbound side of the road, hiding in a ditch, Marrs said.

This is not the first run-in Price has had with deputies over the years. Court records in Montgomery County General District Court show Price has convictions dating back to a drunken driving charge in 1990 to a most recent conviction for escape in October 1995.

Rakes was not injured in the fight. Roane went to Carilion Radford Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.
