Cazzie Russell, the 1966 national college basketball player of the year for Michigan and a former NBA star, is among the coaches and athletic administrators scheduled to speak and counsel when the NCAA's YES Clinic is held March 22 at Roanoke College's Bast Center.
The YES (Youth Education through Sports) Clinic is scheduled in conjunction with the NCAA men's Division III Final Four at the Salem Civic Center. It is open to youths age 10-18, at no cost.
Russell, an ordained minister and coach at Savannah (Ga.) College of Art & Design, heads a roster that also includes four Old Dominion Athletic Conference coaches and Colby's Dick Whitmore, who ranks 11th among active Division III coaches in victories and has a top 10-ranked club this season.
Each youth participant will receive an NCAA YES T-shirt, a ticket to the NCAA championship game later that day and gifts from NCAA corporate partners. The clinic begins at 8:30 a.m. Sessions will run until 12:30 p.m.
Pre-registration is required for YES participants, which will be limited to 400. Call John Shaner of the Salem Civic Center staff at 375-3004.

* ProServ, an international sports marketing company based in Arlington, has announced it will represent Virginia football teammates Tiki and Ronde Barber from Roanoke.
By signing with an agent, Ronde Barber, who had announced he would bypass his final season of college eligibility to play professional football, no longer has the option of changing his mind.
* In Troy, Ala., Dan Smith hit a two-run homer off relief pitcher Shawn Pyles in the top of the seventh inning to lead VMI past Troy State 3-2 in the opener for both baseball teams. Ryan Mitchell got the victory for the Keydets.
ETC. Jaguars 2nd in AAU tournament
The Roanoke Jaguars 13-and-under AAU boys' basketball team finished second in the recent Guilford College YMCA All-Star tournament in Greensboro, N.C. After beating Asheboro (N.C.) YMCA 70-27 and Martinsville 73-32, the Jaguars lost to Guilford YMCA 45-39 in the championship game. Named to the all-tournament team from the Jaguars were Cornelius Penn, J.R. Reynolds and Daniel Payne.
The Jaguars' 11-and-under squad took third place in the tournament by beating the Triangle (N.C.) Knights 57-27 in the consolation round.
