Chris Huffman hit a buzzer-beating jumper from the free-throw line as Roanoke Valley Christian edged Roanoke Catholic 61-60 on Thursday night in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' game at the Eagles' gym.
RVC led most of the way, but the Celtics went in front 60-58 when Terron Reed converted an offensive rebound with less than a minute to play. The Eagles' Brad Hutchins was fouled bringing the ball upcourt against pressure defense on the ensuing possession. Hutchins made the first free throw, but missed the back end of the one-and-one. Catholic controlled the rebound, but turned over the ball to set the stage for Huffman, who finished with 17 points.
Hutchins scored 16 and Dan Bivens added 12 for RVC (13-5 overall, 9-3 conference). Terron Reed led the Celtics (6-14, 5-6) with 21 points, Brendan McCarthy had 17 and Chad Wall contributed 13.

At the same time, the Spartans (11-7) also lost their second-leading scorer, Herschel Thomas, for a key Blue Ridge District game tonight at home against Lord Botetourt. Thomas was ejected in the final two minutes for a flagrant personal foul and, by Virginia High School League rules, must miss the team's next scheduled contest.
Cave Spring (12-6) held a 34-24 lead at the half and extended it to 50-32 when Ricky Dierker got seven of his 12 points in the third quarter.
