DAVIS, Helen Hendricks, 53, of Ripplemead, went to live with the Lord on Friday, February 7, 1997, from Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was a loving and active mother and grandmother to her 11 grandchildren. Born in Princeton, W.Va., on June 13, 1943, she was the daughter of Henry Armstrong Southern of Athens, W.Va., and the late Dorothia White Southern. She was a former employee of the Macy McClaugherty School cafeteria. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Elmer Bennett Hendricks; three sisters, Hazel Mills, Sheila Sutherland and JoAnn White, and one grandchild, Wesley Jordan Britts. She is survived by her husband, Curtis L. Davis; one son and daughter-in-law, Benny and Janifer Hendricks of Pembroke; two daughters and a son-in-law, Debbie Hendricks Britts of Pearisburg, and Vickie Hendricks and Howard Phillips of Dublin; one sister, Sue Hall of Athens, W.Va.; five brothers, Bobby Southern, Walter Southern, Ralph Southern and Junior Southern, all of Athens, and Clayton Southern of Oakvale, W.Va., and 11 grandchildren, B. J. Hendricks, Justin Britts, Cody Davis, Kaila Hendricks, Brittany Hendricks, Ryan Davis, Taylor Britts, Dustin Davis, Taylor Davis, Luke Phillips and Lukis Davis. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel, Pembroke, with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn and Elder Bobby Wilburn officiating. DILLARD, Charlotte Robey, (``Baby Doll''), 81, of Buena Vista, died at her home Thursday, February 6, 1997, after a short illness. Born in Berryville on August 17, 1915, she was the daughter of the late LaTrobe Buchanan and Audrey Robey Dillard. She was the dance instructor at Southern Seminary Junior College for over 30 years. She also taught dance to local residents of Buena Vista and Lexington. She studied in New York at the Chaliffe School of Dance and was a member of the Dance Masters of America. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where she was a Layreader. She is survived by two sisters, Doris Dillard Robinson of Buena Vista and Martha Ann Schneider of Virginia Beach; four nieces, Michele Swann, Melissa Price, Susan Robinson, and Ann Schneider; five nephews, Lewis Johnston, Stephen Robinson, Jay Schneider, David Schneider, and Jeffrey Robinson; three great-nieces, Jenna Swann, Amanda Johnston, and Meg Price; two great-nephews, Jason Swann and Bryan Johnston. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 1997, at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Al Whitelock officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. ELLIOTT, Maude Moore, 92 of Munster, Ind. died February 6, 1997. Arrangements by Ashland Memorial Chapel Gardens, Jefferson, N.C. She is survived by 11 children two of which live in Roanoke, Cecil and Hilda Moore, Jean and Harry Davison.
FARRIS, Henry Arthur, 81, of Newbern, died Friday, February 7, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born May 28, 1915, in Newbern, he was the son of the late Harry Arthur Farris and Mary Mable Miller Farris. He was a veteran of World War II, serving on active duty for two years. Upon his return from service, he and his brothers operated three grocery stores, and later operated the family dairy business, where he was manager and president for 32 years. He retired in 1978, was a charter member of the Dublin Lions Club, serving as President and member for 40 plus years. He was the first fire chief of the Newbern Volunteer Fire Department and served as fire chief for 27 years. He was the past president of Newbern Community Club, past member of the Board of Supervisors, serving for 12 years. He was a board member of Signet Bank for 18 years, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Newbern Cemetery, served as president of the New River Valley Fair Association for 30 years, served as president of the Virginia Association of Fairs. He was a member of Radford Church of Christ, serving as Elder for 18 years. Surviving are his wife, Eugenia Showalter Farris; one daughter, Betty Farris, Woodstock, Ga.; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Edward Farris and wife, Sara Hunter Farris, Newbern; one sister, Irene Farris Harvey, Pulaski County; two brothers, Roscoe Farris, Dublin, Tyree Farris, Newbern; one grandson, John Henry Farris; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Radford Church of Christ, 8th and Robertson St., with Mr. Larry Phillips and Mr. Tom Hodge officiating. FOSTER, William Steptoe Jr., 86, of Seaford, Del., formerly of Blacksburg, Va., died Friday, February 7, 1997, at Life Care at Lofland Park in Seaford. He was born in Bedford, Va., to the late William Steptoe and Belle Morrison Thomson Foster. Mr. Foster was a supervisor at duPont Company in Seaford, retiring in 1970 after 34 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operator, leaving the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church as well as the Seaford Kiwanis Club, and was Past Governor of Capital District (Md., Del., D.C. and Va.), also a member of the Hunter's Lodge A.F.&A.M. of Blacksburg. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was an avid supporter of the Hokie Football Team. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Mary White Foster; a daughter, Gail F. Kirk of Rising Sun, Md.; two granddaughters, and a great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 1997, at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church, Seaford, Del., with the Rev. Earle N. Baker officiating. HARRELL, Brian Kevin, 29, of the Little Creek Community, Dublin, died Friday, February 7, 1997, of injuries from an auto accident. He wa s born July 9, 1967, at Radford, the son of Keith and Becky Hash Harrell, Dublin. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the 101st Airborne Division in the Persian Gulf War. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sherry Dalton, Dublin; one brother, Jay Harrell, Dublin; two half-brothers, Chuck Stone, Christiansburg, and Kent Stone, Weaver, Ala.; maternal grandparents, Rev. HOLLYDAY, Thomas Baker, 77, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, February 7, 1997, at the local hospital. He was a son of the late William Claude and Lillian Baker Hollyday, and was preceded in death by a brother, James D. Hollyday; and a son-in-law, Roy Martin. Mr. Hollyday was a Navy veteran of World War II. A radar man on the USS Fletcher in the South Pacific, he was especially proud of his contribution in the battle in the Soloman Islands. He served as an officer on the USS Fowler in the Atlantic, doing convoy duty to Africa. He attended Franklin & Marshall College and graduated from Villanova University. He was Vice President and General Manager of Dy-Dea Service. In the Presbyterian church he was a deacon and an ordained Elder. He was currently an active and faithful member of the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church. He and his wife were owners and proprietors of Salthouse Store at Philpott Lake. Surviving are his wife, Mary Bryce Hollyday; four daughters and three-sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Bill Wittmer, Midlothian, Linda and Dick Ward, Braffetsville, Ohio, Melissa Martin, Charlotte, N.C., Amy and Michael Neese, Houston, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Wendell and Carolina Hollyday, Pennsauken, N.J., David Wallace and Birgitta Hollyday, Long Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Holly and Larry Hale, Billy and Judy Wittmer, Scott Wittmer, Laurie and Tony Kirchner, Greg and Lori Ward, Randy and Virginia Ward, Meloday Martin, Michael Martin, Kurt Hollyday, Sheila Hollyday, Gigja Hollyday, Rebecca Neese; one great-grandchild, Lauren Elizabeth Hale; three brothers, William C., Joseph S., and Robert D. LEACH, Helen Winston, 83, formerly of Radford, died Thursday, February 6, 1997, in a Raleigh, N.C. hospital. She was a graduate of Radford College in the class of 1935. She was a member of the Grove United Methodist Church, and was the widow of Rollie E. Leach. Surviving are a son, Walter W. Leach, Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Ivan (Jack) Winston of Salem, and Edward (Ed) Winston of Roanoke; one sister, Dor othy W. Price, Monroe, N.C. LEWIS, Leslie, 84, of Roanoke, died Thursday evening, February 7, 1997 in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was retired from Nassau County, N. Y., and was a member of Windsor Hills Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and a grandson, Christopher Lewis. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mary Adeline Lewis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Lorraine Lewis, Roanoke, Richard and Lorraine Lewis, Shippenville, Pa.; six grandchildren, Kevin Lewis, Brian Lewis, Michelle Kimbrell, Gregory Lewis, Russell Lewis, Robert Lewis; twelve great-grandchildren. MARTIN, Eva May Frazier, 103, of Rich Creek, died Thursday, February 6, 1997, at the home of her daughter, Mae Crabtree, with whom she made her home for the last 35 years. She was born in Summers County, W.Va. August 26, 1893. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Oscar, a Confederate Soldier, and Laura May Beasley Frazier, and was the last member of her immediate family. Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Grove Church of Christ at Narrows. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter T. Martin; a son, Woodrow, and wife, Ruth Martin; a son-in-law, Henry Crabtree; nine sisters; and four brothers. She is survived by three daughters, Mae Crabtree of Rich Creek, Virginia McClaugherty and husband, Kellis, of Bozoo, W.Va., Irene Clevenger and husband, Kenneth, of Blacksburg. SIMPKINS, B. Seibert, 91, of Christiansburg, died Thursday evening, February 6, 1997, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home following a long illness. He was a long-time employee and manager of W. R. Angle Company Grocery in Christiansburg. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Christiansburg Lions Club, and also a member of McDaniel Lodge #86, AF & AM. Surviving are his wife, Virginia G. Simpkins; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Joe P. Gills of Roanoke, Mrs. Edgar Simpkins, Floyd County; a niece, Cynthia G. Rose, Sarasota, Fla.; and a nephew, Richard H. Gills, Roanoke. The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday from St. Paul United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Douglas W. Kanney. Interment, with Masonic Rites, will follow in Sunset Cemetery. SLAUGHTER, Rosemarie, 50, formerly of 816 Fairview Drive, Plymouth, Wis., passed away on Thursday morning, February 6, 1997, at the home of her son after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on November 11, 1946 in Mannheim, Germany, a daughter of the late Jakob Wilhelm and Maria Jaenner Schmidt. She attended schools in Germany. On July 23, 1964, she married Lane E. Slaughter in Mannheim, Germany. The couple lived in Germany after their marriage, before moving to Floyd, Va. in 1966. Her husband preceded her in death on May 17, 1974. She then moved to Plymouth, Wis. in 1975. She had been employed at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Plymouth for many years, and was employed at Blackwolf Run in Kohler before her illness. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Plymouth. She was a member and secretary of the Mullet Maidens Homemakers in Plymouth. She enjoyed bowling in leagues in Plymouth and Elkhart Lake Leagues. She was a member of the Plymouth Football Booster Club at the high school. Survivors include one son, Waitman (Nancy) Slaughter of Plymouth; one daughter, Stacie (Chad) Kuck of Sheboygan; one grandson, Lane Slaughter of Plymouth; one sister, Ruth (Ewald) Siech of Plymouth; two nephews, Robert (Pam) Siech of Plymouth, William Seich of Plymouth; one sister-in-law, Judy Dalton of Virginia; one brother-in-law, Lonnie (Joyce) Slaughter of Virginia; other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held on Monday, February 10, at 7 p.m. at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Rev. James Hoppert, Pastor of Salem United Church of Christ in Plymouth, will officiate. TURNER, Charles Orville, (``Red""), 78, of Lexington, died Thursday, February 6, 1997, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. He was born on January 30, 1919, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late Augustus Samuel Turner and Nina Life Turner. Mr. Turner retired from the Virginia Military Institute Post Exchange. He was a former president of W. L. Foltz & Son Insurance Agency and vice president of Rabe Oil Company. Mr. Turner was a charter member and past president of the Lexington Lions Club, in which he had 30 years of perfect attendance. He was chairman of the organizing committee of the Lexington-Rockbridge County Jaycees and was a past chairman and fund drive chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Mr. Turner was a veteran of World War II, retiring from the U. S. Air Force with the rank of major. He was a member of Moomaw Commandery No. 27, Mountain City Lodge No. 67 A.F.&A.M., and Rockbridge Royal Arch Chapter No. 44. Mr. Turner was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church and had served as a board member and vice chairman of the board of deacons. He had been a Sunday school teacher for 25 years. Surviving are his wife, Wynnell Edwards Turner; one son, Col. Timothy Taylor Turner, USAF, Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Latitia Turner Little of Rockledge, Fla.; one brother, David H. Turner of Harrisonburg; one sister, Nina F. Stitler of Culpeper; a brother-in-law, Charles E. Swink of Lexington; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Frankie Jackson. Williams III of Floyd; two sisters, Phyllis Tate of Blacksburg, Ruth Parker of Christiansburg; two grandchildren, Jack Lux and Jennifer Lux, both of Virginia Beach; five nieces; and four nephews. A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 10, at 11 a.m. at Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The body will be taken to McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, for visitation Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to M. E. Cox Center for Elder Day Care, Inc., 644 N.
