Town/gown article
WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville Community College and its Manufacturing Technology Center are featured in the current issue of Appalachian magazine, the journal of the Appalachian Regional Commission.
A companion article titled "Putting the Community First" also focuses on the college's president, William Snyder, and how he keeps in touch with community needs by spending time in community activities.
Snyder and the college had to get around a state law prohibiting "branch campuses" for community colleges in meeting a community need for education centers in Smyth County and Galax. The centers opened in 1991 and 1992, respectively. The college provides academic courses in each center but has no capital investment in them.
Snyder founded the college's Educational Foundation in 1991 to provide student scholarships and upgrade the college's instructional equipment. Snyder has been president since 1980.
