BROWN, Euna Lee Gray Lambert, 66, of Wytheville, died Saturday, February 8, 1997 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born July 8, 1930 in Ivanhoe, Va., the daughter of the late Homer and Sallie Lowe Gray. she was a former employee of Counts Drug Store and was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Lambert, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Con Brown, of the home; a sister, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Shiflett of St. Louis, MO.; three brothers, Clifford Gray of Chesterfield, Frederick Gray, Allen Gray, both of Roanoke; two stepsons, Carson Brown, Clinton Martin; granddaughter, Crystal Brown, all of Wytheville; one niece, Teresa Moore, St. Louis, MO.; five nephews, James Pierce, Jr., Roanoke, Billy Shiflett, St. Louis, MO., Larry Gray, Chesterfield, Dennis Gray, Richmond, Michael Gray, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 11, 1997 at 11 a.m., at Barnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Long officiating. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery. BRYANT, Edward W., 67, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, February 9, 1997, at the local hospital. He was a son of the late Samuel Robert and Mary Edwards Bryant, and was a member of Blue Ridge Chapel School of the Prophets. Surviving are his wife, Madge Bryant of the home; daughter an d son-in-law, Deborah and Terry Knight of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Sara and Marcie Knight, and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ellen and Lloyd Riddle of Martinsville and Mae Belton of Ridgeway. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Flora Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Philip Crandall and Pastor Joseph Crandall officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Surviving are her parents, Joseph Gillespie and Charlotte Gillespie; mat ernal grandmother, Florence Gordon of Vinton; three children, Keisha Scott of Pennsylvania, Bobbie Scott of Lynchburg and Steven Bush of Vinton; sister and brother-in-law, Tessy and Tony Minnick of Roanoke; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Joseph Gillespie Jr. of Callaway, Steve Gillespie and Wanda Saunders of Roanoke, Thomas Gillespie, Vince Gillespie, John Gillespie and Amy Jones, all of Vinton, and Gary and Sandy Gillespie of Huddleston; a special loved one, Patrick Roach of Cleveland, Ohio; also, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. CRAIG, Charles Edgar, (``Chuck""), 65, of Lynchburg, died Friday, February 7, 1997, while participating in one of the things he loved most, playing golf. He was the husband of Nancy Durst Craig of Lynchburg. Born in Mattoon, Ill., he was a son of the late Ralph Edgar Craig and Callie Leora Calhoun Craig. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Anya Ruell Craig, and one brother, Richard Craig. Mr. Craig was a devoted member and former Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and a retired employee of Nationwide Insurance Company after 40 years in the insurance business. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Charles E. (``Chuck"") Craig Jr. and Thomas A. Craig of Richmond, and Robert D. Craig and his wife, Gloria of Roanoke; two daughters, Kathy C. Engler and her husband, Donald of Richmond and Bettina Craig of Lynchburg; two stepsons, John Gundaker and his wife, Maria of Mississauga, Ontario, and Brent Gundaker and his wife, Marbely of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Maurice Craig of Mattoon, Ill., and Marvin Craig of Charleston, Ill.; one sister, Betty Sestini of Mattoon, Ill., and 11 grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Melinda Drive in Lynchburg by Bishop Ronald J. Kunz. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg; from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, and at other times at the residence.

DUDDING, Ross Rupert, 83, of Roanoke, went to be with his Lord on Friday, February 7, 1997. He was baptized into the Christian faith, Deciples of Christ at Craig Healing Springs in April of 1933 by F. M. Jones, Minister and attended church there until his move to Roanoke in the 1950s. Ross had attended and been blessed by many friends at the East Gate Church of the Nazarene, pastored by the Rev. George Stevenso n, now, and formerly by Rev. Lockhart. Ross is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Oscar B. and Lorraine Dudding of Pembroke; one nephew, Benjamin R. Dudding. FOSTER, William Steptoe, Jr., 86, of Seaford, Delaware, formerly of Blacksburg, died Friday, February 7, 1997 at Life Care at Lofland park in Seaford, DE. GARBETT, Millard, (``Buck""), of Richmond, died Sunday, February 9, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Barbara S. Garbett; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen G. and Glenn Setliff of Durham, N.C., Melissa R. and Steward Cressin of Richmond; two sons and daughters-in-law, Vernon D. and Gwen Garbett of marietta, Ga., Robert T. and Ruth Garbett of El Paso, Texas; seven grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Constance G. and Tom Sixbey of Roanoke. Mr. Garbett was employed by the Richmond Times Dispatch for twenty-eight years and was currently the Major Accounts Manager. He was a member of the Metropolitan Lodge #11 A.F. & A.M., the Acca Temple Greeters, the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and a member of Cambridge Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where a Masonic Memorial Service will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday, and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. GARLAND, Nina Blankenship, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 9, 1997. She retired from American Viscose Corporation. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Benjamin M. Blankenship, and her second husband, James A. Garland. Mrs. Garland is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Aileen B. and Joseph J. Duschean; grandchildren, Teresa L. Duschean, Douglas P. Duschean, D arren M. Duschean, David C. Duschean, and Tracy D. and husband Thomas P. Williams; sister, Ina L. Baine, and a niece, Carolyn Wolfer. GRAY, Bernice F., 92, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, February 9, 1997. She was the widow of Herbert L. Gray. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Downey of Vinton; grandchildren, Valerie Altizer and Gwynne Myers, both of Vinton; great-grandchildren, Heather Kinsey, Roanoke, Josh and Allison Myers, Ashley Altizer, all of Vinton; brother, Harry L. Fink, Bedford County. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at Lotz Vinton Chapel. Interment will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery. HACKLER, James Howard, 84, of Suffolk, formerly of Speedwell, died Friday, February 7, 1997 in a Suffolk hospital. He was retired from Virginia Department of Transportation and he started the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Speedwell Ruritan Club and was a member of the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #226. He was preceded in death by a daughters, Louise H. Melton. He is survived by his wife, Annie Marie Hackler, Suffolk; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy A. and Stanley O. King of Suffolk; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby D. and Jean M. Hackler of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Bonnie H. Hackler of Comers Rock, Dove H. Carrior of Independence; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Speedwell Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Collins and Dr. Merle D. Correll, with interment in Comers Rock Cemetery, Comers Rock, Va. The family will receive friends at Grubb Funeral Home Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m., with a Masonic memorial service conducted by the Mt. HALE, Gertrude Wilkerson, (``Gerrie""), 73, of Roanoke County, passed away Sunday, February 9, 1997. Mrs. Hale had been an active church and choir member at Buchanan Baptist Church, North Roanoke Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, where she had been a longtime member. She was also active in the XYZ Senior Group at First Baptist and had worked for Hofheimer's Shoe Store for many years. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Richard (``Dick"") A. Hale; her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Stephen A. and Patricia K. Hale of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Emmylee Kaytlyn Hale, Savana Joy Hale and a soon-to-be-born grandchild; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Charing and George W. Cook Sr. of Roanoke; her brothers, Albert H. Wilkerson of Natural Bridge Station and James Richard Wilkerson of Cleveland, Ohio; also, several nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church (new sanctuary) on Tuesday, February 11, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. John D. Cochran and the Rev. Charles Ward officiating. HALE, James Charles, Sr., of Roanoke County, died Saturday, February 8, 1997 at Meadowbrook Convalescent Home in Shawsville, Va. He was born in 1936, the son of the late Zed N. Hale and Trula Hale, of Richlands, Va. Mr. Hale is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James C., Jr. and Robin Hale, Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Joseph Parrish, Vinton; grandchildren, Josh and Lindsey Hale, Drew and Tyler Parrish; sisters, Marie H. Shelton of Roanoke, Beulah Hale of Richlands; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dana and Dr. Howard C. Scott of Richlands, Delores and Dover J. England of Roanoke; and ten nieces and nephews. He was born, educated and worked in Virginia his entire life. After attending Va. Tech, he was employed by Norfolk & Western Railroad in Norfolk, Va. for ten years. He was a resident of Roanoke County for the past 30 years. He was an insurance sales person and as past owner of Old Dominion Farm, was a cattle farmer. A ceremony celebrating his life will be conducted by Dr. James B. Hallenhead and Dr. Stephen Scott at the Singleton Funeral Home Chapel, Cedar Bluff, Va., February 11, 1997 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Green Hills Memorial Garden, Claypool Hill, Va. HUTTON, Mary Creloa, 84, of Marion, widow of J. Hugh Hutton, died Saturday, February 8, 1997, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Ron Hutton and Robert Hutton. Mrs. Hutton was a member of First Baptist Church of Damascus, and later, after moving to Marion, became an active member of Marion Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Jim and Phyllis Hutton of Blacksburg, Joe and Suzanne Hutton of Abingdon and Betty Hutton of Chapel Hill, N.C., and five grandchildren, Ron Hutton of Chapel Hill, N.C., Cynthia Ferrell of Richmond, Chris Hutton of Greenville, N.C., Vicki Hutton of New Orleans, La., and Candice Hawkins of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at Marion Baptist Church, with Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. KINGREA, Clinton Robert, 63, of Radford, passed away Saturday, February 8, 1997, at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. He was a retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Glenna S. Kingrea; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Allen and Denisa Kingrea of Owensboro, Ky.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kaye and Joe Zerk of Cleveland, Tenn., and Gloria and Michael Thompson of Owensboro, Ky.; seven grandchildren, and a special friend, Thelma Likens. PARKER, Ruby Ethel Hayden, 83, of Lexington, died Saturday, February 8, 1997. She was born in Pickton, Texas on July 13, 1913, a daughter of the late William Carl Hayden and Addie Elizabeth Culpepper Hayden. Mrs. Parker graduated from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University), Lubbock, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She received a Master in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She was a schoolteacher and home demonstration agent in Texas before being appointed as a missionary to Chile, where she served for 37 years with young people in Sunday School and taught church study courses in Bible, religious education and home economics. Prior to retirement in 1980, she was stationed in Talca, Chile, where she made home visits and taught women how to prepare and preserve food for their families. Mrs. Parker was director of the Baptist Young Women's organizations and promoter of the Woman's Missionary Union in a district of eight churches and six missions. During retirement she worked in Waco, Texas with her husband in the Hispanic Community and gave lectures on missions until her illness in the 1980's prohibited her from continuing. She was a member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Rev. John Alexander Parker; two sons, John David Parker of Lexington and C. Kenneth Parker of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, Anson, Jennifer and Lau ra Parker of Lexington. Mrs. parker was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at the Manly Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Harvey and the Rev. William P. Andrews officiating. Mrs. Parker's remains will be sent to the Fails Funeral Home, Lucedale, Mississippi for final services and interment in Rocky Creek Cemetery, Lucedale, Mississippi. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, February 10,1997, at Williams Funeral Service, Lexington. PLUNKETT, Galen Price Sr., 83, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 9, 1997. Mr. Plunkett was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, who was very active in church work, serving as a life term Deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. Mr. Plunkett served in the U.S. Army Air Force for four years. He had many friends and was loved by many people. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 54 years, Anna Belle Plunkett; daughters and son-in-law, Gladys P. Allen, and Bonnie Sue and David Leckrone; sons and daughters-in-law, Galen Price Jr. and Martha Plunkett, and John C. and Jacqueline Plunkett; nine grandchildren, Lisa Plunkett, Daniel Plunkett, Allison Leckrone, David Leckrone, Andrew Leckrone, John Charles Plunkett II, Sara Lawhorne, Galen Price Plunkett III and Cleveland Plunkett; several nieces and nephews, and brother and sister-in-law, Aubrey and Margie Plunkett. ROBERTSON, Ruby Gray Jones, 75, of Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center, Martinsville, died Sunday, February 9, 1997, at Memorial Hospital of Henry County. She was the wife of the late James M. Robertson. Born in Franklin County on May 21, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Clarence H. Jones and Thettie L. Young Jones. She was a homemaker, and a charter member of Henry Fork Church of the Brethren in Rocky Mount. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lynch of Rocky Mount. She is survived by two daughters, Retha R. Oakes of Martinsville and Jackie R. Johnson of Ridgeway; a daughter-in-law, Trenda Stoneman Robertson of Newport News; two sons, Larry W. Robertson of Martinsville and C. Douglas Robertson of Yorktown; two sons-in-law, L. D. Oakes of Martinsville and Steve Johnson of Ridgeway; a sister, Edith J. Goin of Collinsville; five brothers, Grady Jones of Rocky Mount, Sidney Jones of Martinsville, Eural Jones of Glade Hill, Calvin Jones of Redwood and Alton Jones of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Dean Oakes of Greenville, S.C., Dale Oakes of Roanoke, Clay Robertson and Christi Johnson of Chesapeake; and three great-grandchildren, Alexandria Oakes and Madison Oakes of Greenville, S.C., and Blake Robertson of Chesapeake. SHUPE, Doris Louise, 74, of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, February 7, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Howard Shupe; four c hildren, Norman Keith Shupe of Elberon, N.J., Randolph Coleman Shupe of Arvada, Colo., Daral Lee Willeford of Aurora, Colo., and Carol Dee Grigonis of Mount Airy, Md.; one brother, Howard F. Dooley of Shawsville; 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. William St. Clair and the Rev. Ralph Angle. Interment will take place later in the week in Bel Air Memorial Gardens in Bel Air, Md. SURFACE, Hubert Vence, (``Tobe""), 83, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, February 8, 1997 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born January 8, 1914 in Blacksburg, to the late Elbert and Mary Ettie Olinger Surface and was also preceded in death by his wife, Christine Virginia Surface. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Joe Ann and Wallace Criner, Christiansburg, Janice and Rufus Cochran, Princeston, IN.; two sons and daughters-in-law, George H. and Peggy Surface, Blacksburg, Charlie B. ``Benny"" and Reba Surface, Christiansburg; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dale Bailey and the Rev. Noah J. Underwood officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg
SWAIN, Sylvester Otis, of Franklin County, departed this life quietly on Friday morning, February 7, 1997, in Danville. He was the son of John Willis and Oma Swain, and the brother of Virgie, Lillie, Hazel, Ollie, William (``Bill"") and Daniel, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
