BOBCATS WIN CROWN IN REGION C

Radford got a good start toward competing for a Group A wrestling title in Salem by sweeping to the Region C championship Saturday at Grayson County High School.

The Bobcats won five individual titles as nine Radford wrestlers qualified for the state tournament that begins Friday at the Salem Civic Center. The Bobcats finished third in Group A a year ago. (Complete results in Scoreboard. B5)

Radford qualified the same number of wrestlers for the state tournament as it did a year ago, but this season the Bobcats will have better seedings because of higher finishes in the region.

Radford won one more Region C weight class than a year ago and scored 235.5 points to outdistance Shawsville (156) and Floyd County (149) in the title scrap that was dominated by the Three Rivers District. Last year, Radford scored 211 points in winning the crown.

Mike Dunbar (145 pounds) led the Radford title winners. He finished fourth last winter. Other Bobcats champions were Benjy Fray (119), Ryan Hall (125), Brian Hudson (130) and Mike Dunbar (145).

In other wrestling action during the weekend:

* In Region IV competition at Abingdon, things went as expected. Grundy scored 348 points to easily outdistance second-place Richlands, which finished with 158 points.

The Golden Wave will come to Salem for the Group AA tournament Friday seeking its 11th consecutive state title. (Complete results in Scoreboard. B5)

Grundy won all but three individual championships and all 14 of its wrestlers qualified for state competition.

It was the Piedmont District's first year as a member of Region IV, and the league had one individual champion. Magna Vista's Waylon Ryder took the crown in the 135-pound division.

Bassett was the top-finishing Piedmont District team, with 114 points for fifth place. The Bengals had second-place finishes from Wayne Milam (103), Jeff Shively (152) and John Miller (heavyweight).

Laurel Park's Anthony Lanier (171), an All-Timesland choice last year, also was a runner-up.
