Jeff Loder's three goals carried Roanoke to an early lead, and the Express held on to knock off the Richmond Renegades 4-3 in an East Coast Hockey League game Sunday night.
Loder opened the scoring on a goal at 4:10 of the first period, off a pass from Tim Christian. He scored two goals in a span of 25 seconds in the next period as the Express took a 4-1 lead.
Andrew Shier and Mike Harding scored as the Renegades outshot Roanoke 13-3 in the third period, but Express goaltender Dave Gagnon turned away 11 shots to secure the victory.
J.F. Tremblay also scored for Roanoke in the opening period. Shier scored a shorthanded goal at 15:01 of the second period that helped the Renegades slice the lead to 4-1.
With the hat trick, Loder increased his total to 20 goals this season.
The Express (27-16-3) moved five points behind third-place Richmond (29-14-4) in the East Division. Sunday's matchup was a makeup of a game scheduled in January. A fire broke out at the Richmond Coliseum, causing electrical damage and forcing the postponement.
Gagnon recorded his 24th victory of the season, turning aside 30 of 33 Renegades shots.
