Ask Letty Nance when her work day ends and some days she might tell you it never does.
If the fifth-grade teacher at Scott Memorial School in Wytheville is not staying after school to give extra help to a pupil, she's coaching the school's Odyssey of the Mind team. At night, she's often on the phone with parents.
"I don't cut my day off at 3:30 and forget it," she said. "I don't mind going the extra step for a child, especially when a child wants to learn."
Nance, who teaches all subjects except science, has been coaching Scott's OM team for four years. It's a volunteer position usually assumed by a parent of a participant. Nance said she enjoys getting the children ready for creative competition. "I get my fulfillment from that," she said.
"Mrs. Nance is one of the teachers in school who is fun to listen to. She makes learning fun," said her nominator.
Nance has taught kindergarten, high school and fifth, sixth and seventh grades. She especially enjoys the maturity and creativity of fifth-graders. "It's a lovable age," she said.
The mother of four grown children and grandmother of three is a native of Albemarle, N.C. She enjoys reading and traveling.
