Patricia R. Sotos' last name was misspelled in a story about her
father's death in Wednesday's Virginia section.
George Frank Roupas, former owner of Sunshine One Hour Cleaners on the Roanoke City Market, died Sunday at a Richmond hospital after a brief illness. He was 90.
Roupas, who was born in Athens, Greece, moved to Roanoke in 1930 to join his father and brother in the dry cleaning business, which also included a hattery that cleaned hats for the local sheriff's deputies among others until hats went out of style.
He worked there until his retirement in 1973, then turned the business over to his wife, Penelope, who ran it until 1983 when she retired and they sold the business.
"He never believed in staying home sick and not going to work," said his daughter, Patricia R. Cotos of Richmond. "He was a very well-respected man. He never said anything bad about anybody."
Roupas, who moved to America to build a better life, never forgot his homeland, his family said. He made five trips back to Greece and was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for 67 years.
He is also survived by his son, Frank Roupas of Roanoke. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Constatine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Richmond.
