GOLLY OLOGIES: Entomology (bugs); geology (rocks) and seismology (earthquakes) are just a few of the ologies (branches of learning) that will be explored Saturday as students, professional scientists and researchers celebrate science and discovery.
The event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Science Museum of Western Virginia, will include a wheelchair braking system from Governor's School students, chemistry findings from Virginia Tech, evidence of millions-of-years-old ocean tides and an update on the Amazon Basin's amazingly adaptable poison frogs. WELL-KNOWN NAMES: Bluegrass fans will quickly recognize the monikers of Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers and The Boys in the Band with Gerald Church. COLORFUL CHARACTERS: You can take that literally as those stringy, red-headed, striped frock-wearing childhood friends Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy lead a song-filled escapade through a magical, make-believe world. Milk and juice will be provided after each of Saturday's performances, at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. TIME OUT FOR MASSING: The Massing of the Colors is a patriotic ceremony to rededicate faith in the colors of the United States and its service people. The Roanoke Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars, in honor of Presidents' Day, will sponsor a Massing of the Colors at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Life Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke.
Approximately 50 color guard units are represented in the brief ceremony, which includes a procession, patriotic lesson, memorial address, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, National Anthem, recognition of colors and recessional. Admission is free. Call 384-6805.
VIOLINIST Derek Reeves, who began playing violin when he was only 2 years old and has achieved national acclaim, will join David Wiley and the Roanoke Symphony in performing the popular Violin Concerto in D, written in 1878 by Tchaikovsky, along with other works.
The performance at 8 p.m. Monday at the Roanoke Civic Center is sponsored by the Friends of the Roanoke Symphony and is dedicated to a Friends founding member, the late Frances B. Hale. Tickets range from $15 for upper balcony seating to $21. An open rehearsal will be at the civic center at 2 p.m. Sunday for a cost of $1. Call 343-9127.
NATIVE NEW YORKER: Robert Jospe and the high-energy, world-beat Inner Rhythm ensemble will perform jazz, Latin, Afro-Cuban and contemporary fusion pieces on African log drums, a trap set and Latin percussion instruments. DANCE DAY: Founding members of such dance companies as Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham and Jose Limon are among panelists and presenters participating Thursday in a day-long tribute to women in modern dance. The events, at various locations on the Hollins College campus, include a luncheon and student talent show at noon; a panel discussion at 2:30 p.m.; a convocation at 4:30 p.m.; a candlelight buffet at 6:30 p.m.; and a dance concert at 8:15 p.m. All events are free except for the lunch, $4.25, and the buffet, $15.
