A welder died Thursday when his torch caused an explosion at the county landfill, sheriff's officials said.
The welder was welding a metal plate at a rail spur under construction at the landfill when he blast tossed him several feet into the air, Sgt. T.W. Harris said.
Several other workers were at the construction site but none of them were injured, Harris said. The rail spur is intended to allow waste to be brought to the landfill by train.
Police withheld the man's name until relatives were notified.
The state Department of Labor was investigating the cause of the blast.
