BANKS, Lelia Marie Carrico, 75, formerly of Independence, passed away Friday, February 7, 1997, at her home in Orange City, Fla. She was born October 29, 1921 in Grayson County to Stewart and Ollie Houck Carrico. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Ralph Banks; her parents, Ollie Houck Carrico and Stewart Carrico; her stepmother, Mae Sumner Carrico; her only sister, Hazel Carrico Joines; her only brother, Leo Carrico; and two grandsons, Justin Lamb and Clint Banks. She is survived by six daughters and one stepdaughter, Patricia Banks Conklin, Marion, Karen Banks Atwood, Sparta, N.C., Bonita Banks Stapleton, Statesboro, Ga., Colett Banks, Teresa Banks Lamb, both of Deltona, Fla., Shari Banks Hager, Altoona, Fla., Myrtle Banks Gift, Pottstown, Pa.; two sons and a stepson, Gary Banks, Sanford, Fla., Stewart Banks, Ocala, Fla., Leroy Noecker, Reading, Pa. Other survivors include 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four aunts, Daisy Turner, Nannie Murphy, Jennie Caudill and Molly Hines, all of Fries; one uncle, Bain Sumner, Independence. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, February 15, 1997, at 11 a.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour preceding the memorial service. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, is in charge of arrangements.

BARNETT, Marie Catherine, (``Reddy""), 67, of Roanoke, died Thursday, February 13, 1997. Arrangements by Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

BOYD, Virgie Keith, 86, of Laurel Fork, died Thursday, February 13, 1997, in a Galax hospital. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Cleo Light of Willys, and Nannie Mae and Lester Wood of Meadows of Dan; one son, Earnie Boyd of Christiansburg; a daughter-in-law, Geraldine Boyd of Woolwine; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and one sister, Lala Moles of Laurel Fork. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd, with the Rev. Byron Childress offic iating. Interment will be in the Boyd cemetery. There will be no night visitation at the funeral home. Friends may call any time at the homes of Mrs. Light and Mrs. Wood.

CAMPBELL, Keith, 75, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997. He was longtim e owner and operator of Keith's Amoco Service in Boxley Hills. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of dedicated service to many loyal and dedicated customers. He was a member and former officer of the Roanoke Chapter of The Virginia Gasoline Retailers Association. He and his wife, Margaret, also owned and operated the Hollins Inn from 1969 to 1973. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Bowers Campbell; son, Warren B. Campbell of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and George Baldwin of Vinton; brother and sister-in-law, Flem William and Sherry Campbell of Charleston, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews. Cryptside services will be in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor, at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 1997. The Rev. Bob Hutchins will officiate. Friends may call Oakey's North Chapel, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, February 14, 1997. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the American Heart Association.

CLEMENT, Evelyn Richards Weaver, 74, of Roanoke, died in a Roanoke Hospital on Wednesday, February 12, 1997. Surviving are her husband, G. Frank Clement, Roanoke; three children, Margaret Weaver Crosson, Fincastle, Dr. Edgar N. Weaver Jr., Roanoke, Dabney Weaver Dwyer, Dallas Tex.; brother, Dr. Lewis G. Richards Jr., Hardy, and eight grandchildren. A memorial service was conducted at St. John's Episcopal Church at 5 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Thomas O'Dell, Dr. Daniel Scott and Dr. Noel Taylor. CROMER, Kenneth Gray, of Vienna, formerly of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pauline Cromer, and daughter, Kathryn Sue Cromer. He was a devoted father of Rhonda L. Roberts of Vienna, Kenneth W. Cromer of Annandale and Deborah C. Wright of Blacksburg. He is also survived by a sister, Ina Mae Graves of Blacksburg; a brother, Haven Cromer of Panama City, Fla., and two grandchildren, Nathan G. Roberts and Lane A. Roberts of Vienna. A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, February 14, 1997, at Franconia United Methodist Church in Alexandria, with funeral services at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 1997, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel in Blacksburg, with the Rev. CRUMPACKER, Samuel A. 92 of Roanoke passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at Radford Community Hospital. He was born February 27, 1904 in Montgomery County to the late John P. and Lucy Ann Akers Crumpacker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel M. Finnell Crumpacker; step son, Robert F. Finnell Sr. He is survived by a step son, Jack J. Finnell, Miami, Fla.; step daughter-in-law, Frances (Mrs. Robert F.) Finnell, Roanoke; grandchildren, Jack Finnell Jr., Miami, Fla., Herbert Finnell, North Palm Beach, Fla., Tad Finnell, Fincastle, Tina Finnell Griffith, Huntersville, N.C.; also surviving are six great-grandchildren; 10 nephews, Charles E. Scaggs, Billy James, Bobby Linkous, Dennis Linkous, and Danny Linkous, all of Christiansburg, Bruce Scaggs, Venice, Fla., Clovis Linkous, Ft. DELP, Bruce W., 79, of Independence, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at his residence, Rt. 2, Independence, Va. He was preceded in death by a son, Rex Delp. He was born July 17, 1917 at Alleghany County, N.C. to Wiley Estel and Mary Blevins Delp. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a former deacon, a WWII veteran, having served in the U. S. Marines and was a retired employee with Burlington Industries, with 35 years service. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Wagoner Delp; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Judy Delp, King, N.C., Ray and Edie Delp, Selma, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Delp, Charlotte, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Iris Delp, Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace and Bill Morris, Lexington, N.C., Reba and Ross McGrady, Verna Honaker, all of Galax; five grandchildren, Chad Delp and wife, Clarke, Kevin Delp, Ashley Delp, Brad Delp and Todd Delp. FRANCISCO, Edsel Ford, 73, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. Mr. Francisco, a Navy veteran, served in the South Pacific during World War II. ``Frisco'' was the retired service manager at Holiday Ford. He was a Sunday School teacher and an active member of Slusser's Chapel Church of God in Blacksburg. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Nelva D. Francisco, Blacksburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Brown, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Joan Francisco, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Kimberly Siciliano and husband, Warren, West Palm Beach, Fla., Sean, Shanna, and Shea Francisco, all of Roanoke; brother, Clifton Francisco Jr. and wife, Barbara, of New Castle; and many loved friends. GROSS, Alma Blanche Billips, 93, of Route 1, Bastian, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997, in Colfax, N.C. She was born in Tazewell County, the daughter of the late William F. and Lovnenia Compton Billips, and was a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church. She graduated from Radford College, and was a school teacher in Bland County. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harvey Gross; two sisters, Nora B. Ramsey, Ethel Billips; and a brother, Alonzo Billips. She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Gross, Robert and Susie Gross, all of Bastian, William ``Bill'' and Toby Gross of Franklin, Eugene and Vickie Gross of Princeton, W.Va., Jimmy and Sarah Gross of Colfax, N.C.; two sisters, Bertha Billips Wesiman, Ruby Billips Yates; two brothers, Woodrow Billips, Gene Billips. Nineteen grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 15, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Pine Grove Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Ashworth and the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Interment will follow in the Gross Family Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. HENDRICKS, Ruth G., 86, of Elliston, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997. Mrs. Hendricks was born in Jamestown, Ohio on October 11, 1910. She was a registered nurse, graduating from Clifton Springs Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., and was retired from Richfield Retirement Center. Mrs. Hendricks will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother. Her kindness and service to her friends and neighbors was a labor of love that gave her life much meaning. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Hendricks was preceded in death by her son, Johnny Hendricks; and her husband, Tom Hendricks. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Don and Carolyn Long, Radford, Cheryl Waldron, Shawsville, Ron and Linda Bonnema, Christiansburg; four grandsons, Jay Stone, Lexington, N.C., Christopher Stone, Christiansburg, Todd Waldron, Elliston, Garret Bonnema, Christiansburg; a granddaughter, Leigh Anne Bonnema, Christiansburg; a special nephew, Dana Glass of Wadsworth, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, February 15, 1997, at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. David Lagerveld. HUDSON, Goldie Wheeler, 88, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was the widow of John H. Hudson, and was preceded in death by a son, James E. Hudson; and a daughter, Margaret Ratcliff. She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Garl Smythers of Port Richie, Fla., Louise and Steve Lins of Sabillisville, Md., Frances Bass of Kenton, Ohio, Elizabeth ``Toot'' Dunford of Wytheville, Beulah and Howard Dunford of Johnson City, Tenn., Becky and Harry Rogers of Max Meadows; four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert O. ``Bobby'' and Callie Hudson of Wytheville, Ted S. and Phyllis Hudson of Christiansburg, Wayne and Bonnie Hudson of Max Meadows, John H. Hudson Jr. of Max Meadows; one sister, Nina W. Hesket of Springfield, Ohio; son-in-law, Moses Ratcliff of Brandywine, Md.; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. MOTICHA, Emily Jeanette Ratcliffe, of 3566 Verona Trail, S.W., Roanoke, Va., passed away Thursday, February 13, 1997. She was the wife of John W. Moticha Sr. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, John W. Moticha Jr.; daughter, Lucy Blankenship, both of Roanoke. Emily was born in Honaker, Va., in 1918, she was the daughter of A. Benjamin and Lucy Stoots Ratcliffe. Her paternal grandparents were Paris and Lydia Childress Ratlif of Garden Creek, Va. She is also survived by Jerry Blankenship, son-in-law; and Sophia Baldwin Moticha, daughter-in-law, both of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Richard Jerry Blankenship Jr., Charlotte, N.C. and Kristen Blankenship Conner, Roanoke; two sisters, Bennie St.Clair, Albequerque, New Mexico, Ernestine Edwards, Cookeville, Tenn. She had numerous Ferguson, Stoots and Ratlif relatives in Russell and Buchanan Counties, Va. Emily had many friends and co-workers at Yale & Towne, General Electric and ITT. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. OWENS, Elwood Ervin, 76 , of 331 Carriage Hill Drive, Pulaski, died early Thursday morning, February 13, 1997, in the Pulaski Health Care Center. He was born on March 26, 1920 in Pulaski County, and was the son of the late Charles H. Owens and Delma Goade Owens.. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Owens; and by a sister, June O. Caldwell. He attended the Dora Highway Baptist Church. He was a retired steel worker and worked for Local Union #697 of Roanoke. He was also a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Emma S. Owens, Pulaski; brother and sister-in-law, Arless E. and Nora P. Owens, Pulaski; stepson, James G. Stillwell, Pulaski; stepgrandson, James Elwood Stillwell, Pulaski; niece, Sharon Gunter, Pulaski; nephews, Gary Davis, Pulaski, Davy Owens, Pulaski, Arless Owens Jr., Pulaski. A private family service will be held Saturday at Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. L. J. Rippey officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. PATSELL, Waneta Marie Counts, 82, of Vinton, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 1997, in Lawrenceville. Funeral noon Friday, Lotz Vinton Chapel.

PITSENBARGER, Billy, 52, of Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Buena Vista, Va., died Wednesday, February 12, 1997. Arrangements by Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Service, Buena Vista.

ROUPAS, George Frank, 90, of 1841 Warrington Rd., S.W. Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Sunday, February 9, 1997 from Saint Mary's Hospital in Richmond. He was born in Athens, Greece. In April, 1930, he arrived in Roanoke and went to work joining his father, Frank Roupas and his brother, Theodore Roupas, at Sunshine Cleaners & Hatters on the historic Roanoke City Market. He held on to his position for fifty-three years until retirement. Sunshine One Hour Cleaners continues to serve the public downtown in the Roupas Building which was built in 1890. The business was founded in 1910 and was operated by the Roupas families for over seventy years. George's father, Frank Roupas, took over the business in 1913. George was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Roanoke for sixty-seven years. Dad will always be remembered for saying that his marriage lasted sixty-two years because he and Mom put `` God first, love second, and forgiveness third.'' Surviving are his wife, Penelope Simopoulos Roupas; and his son, Frank G. Roupas, Roanoke; daughter, Patricia R. Sotos, grandchildren, Mark & Georgia Karakas, Frank J. Sotos, and Penelope J. Sotos, all of Richmond; sister-in-law, Katherine C. Roupas; brother, Thomas F. Roupas; sisters, Bertha R. Rosson and Lena R. Strautin. George requested that he be buried in Richmond if he passed away there, and that he be buried next to his son-in-law. Dad always said to love everyone, no matter what people say or do to you. He often reminded us that laughter is the best medicine. The funeral service was held Thursday, February 13, 1997, at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Richmond with interment in Riverview Burial Park. May his memory be eternal.

SMITH, Ricky Layman, of Roanoke County, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, February 10, 1997. Born on January 13, 1955, he was preceded in death by his parents, Inez and Chester (``Smitty'') Smith. WILLIAMS, Alvia, (``Sister Miller""), 72, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Vinton, Va., passed away Sunday, February 9, 1997, after a period of illness at Cabrini Hospital in New York, N.Y. Sister Miller is survived by her daughter, Sheila and her son-in-law Keith Roach of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her sister, Thel ma Taylor, Brooklyn, N.Y.; stepbrother, Morris Miller, Jr., Roanoke; six nephews; four nieces; nine great-nieces and nephews; five nieces-in-law; and a host other relatives. She was a long-standing member of Reed Street Baptist Church in Vinton and Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in New York, N.Y. Sister Miller was a friend to everyone and was loved by all who knew her. There will be a viewing at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel Saturday, February 15, 1997 at 10 a.m., followed by graveside services at C. C. Williams Memorial Park. The Rev. Ivory Morton will officiate.

WOOD, Patricia Lynn, (``Pat""), 59, of Rt. 1 Box 621, Grottoes, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 12, 1997. She was born Septem ber 16, 1937 in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Russell L. and Blanche Poff Peters, Sr. She was a 1955 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, Salem, Va., a member of the Salem Baptist Church and was retired from Western State Hospital, Staunton. Surviving are her husband, Walter Thomas ``Tommy"" Wood of Grottoes; a sister, Betty Peters Damron, Vinton; a brother and sister-in-law, Russell L. and Judy Peters, Daleville; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 1997, at the Chapel of McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, by the Rev. Derwood Cowan. Burial will follow in Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Crimora. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 14, 1997 at the funeral home and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grottoes Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 1187, Grottoes, Va. 24441.
