DRIVERS ED DEJA VU

The American Automobile Association offers the following suggestions for driving in fog:

* Turn headlights on and use low beams. High beams, or brights, don't work as well because the beams reflect off the fog back into the driver's eyes.

* Slow down. Don't drive so fast you can't stop quickly.

* Keep a two-second visual cushion between your car and the one in front of you. When the car in front passes an object, make sure at least two seconds go by before you pass the object.

* Turn windshield wipers on. Condensation sometimes will settle, especially in thick fog.

* If possible, keep driving. It is better to continue at a slow pace than to stop.

If you must stop:

1. Pull well off the side of the road.

2. Turn emergency flashers on.

3. Do not get out of your vehicle. It is more difficult to see a person standing beside the road than a car with flashers on.

4. Carry a flashlight in the car at all times. Use flares and reflective triangles to mark the area. Flares are more effective than triangles in fog.
