Moonshiner William Gray ``Dee'' Stanley was arrested Sunday night and charged with malicious wounding in the shooting of his son, Scott, said Franklin County Sheriff W.Q. ``Quint'' Overton.
Scott Stanley, 26, was shot several times at the Stanley family's home on Virginia 40 near Rocky Mount on Sunday evening shortly after 7, Overton said.
He was later airlifted from Franklin Memorial Hospital to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was in surgery early this morning, a nursing supervisor said.
Overton said an investigation continues and no details about a possible motive or other circumstances surrounding the shooting were being made public late Sunday.
Dee Stanley, 51, was being held in the Franklin County Jail without bond.
Stanley and his two sons, Scott and Jason, gained statewide notoriety last year when members of the family were arrested three times in different counties within two weeks and charged with hauling moonshine up Interstate 81.
Scott and Jason Stanley were convicted of moonshine charges last year in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Dee Stanley was acquitted of the only charge he faced in Albemarle County.
Dee Stanley - who already had grabbed plenty of headlines over the years for his moonshining exploits - was most recently arrested and charged with transporting illegal liquor this month in Charlottesville.
