ANDREWS, Mary Huff, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, February 15, 1997. She was the widow of H. Price Andrews. She was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She was also a member of the Harm on Bible Class. Surviving are nieces and nephews, Capt. and Mrs. Steven Huff of U.S. Army, Mr. and Mrs.John R. Huff, Las Vegas, Nev., Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Barrett, Johnson City, Tenn., Mrs. Susan Durant of Detroit, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Cross of Johnson City, Tenn., Mrs. Elizabeth Sue O'Quinn, Mary Ann Smith, Dallas, Texas; two devoted family friends, Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Stubbs Jr. of Savannah, Ga. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997 at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. BALLARD, Alma Hayslett, 87, of Lexington, died Saturday, February 15, 1997, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. Born in Rockbridge County on December 19, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Charles Dorman Hayslett and Mildred Virginia Clark Hayslett. Mrs. Ballard worked at Roses Department Store for more than 20 years, and was a member of Collierstown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Russell Ballard and Lonnie Vess. Also preceding her in death was one daughter, Lennis Vess Young. Surviving are one son, Dallas Erskine Vess of Lexington; a son-in-law, Leslie Young of Lexington; a sister, Marie H. Ballard of Lexington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Claudia Hayslett of Lexington, and Cardie and Rosa Hayslett of Lexington; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Delores Goad of Lexington. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997, from the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. David Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Lexington Lifesaving and First Aid Crew or Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, but the family will receive friends at the residence at any time. COX, Virgie Reed, 84, of Indian Valley, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997, at Radford Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Elisha and Angeline (``Ann"") Phillips Reed. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Cox, and a son, Roger E. (``Mickey"") Cox. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Bernice Cox of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn C. and Danny Baker of Richmond, and Pauline C. and Swanson Pendleton of Roanoke; one sister and brother-in-law, Lula and Hobert Marshall of Indian Valley; a sister-in-law, Edna Cox Reed of Willis; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. CRUSENBERRY, Mae Spangler, 78, of Roanoke, died Friday, February 14, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. She was the widow of both Cleve Spangler and Paul E. Crusenberry. Surviving are a son, Grover Spangler of Roanoke; a sister, Mattie Louise Britt of Bladensboro, N.C., and two brothers, Alsieberry Dickerson of Dublin and Marvin R. Dickerson of Christiansburg. DICKERSON, Ivra Elizabeth Cox, 82, of 303 Edgewood Drive, Galax, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997, at Twin County Regional Hospital. She was born in Floyd County to Damon and Rebecca Duncan Cox. Mrs. Dickerson is survived by her husband, William Harman Dickerson of the home; son and daughter-in-law, William Alan and Shirley Dickerson of Galax; four grandchildren, James Alan Dickerson of Galax, William Bryan and Teresa Dickerson of Hickory, N.C., Caroline Dolinger Dickerson of Jacksonville, Fla., Christopher Robinson Dickerson of Galax; three sisters, Clydia Cox Lester of Galax, Lillie Cox Marshall of Radford, Edna Cox Reed of Willis. Ivra Dickerson was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Galax and involved in many community activities in Galax and the surrounding Twin Counties. Having served as past president of many local clubs and organizations, she was a dedicated volunteer and a recipient of The Community Service Award. Mrs. Dickerson was active until the time of her death in the following organizations, Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge, Galax Fireman's Auxillary, Regional Hospital Foundation, V.F.W. Auxillary, Association of Retarded Citizens, Galax Clean City Committee, American Cancer Society, Twin County March of Dimes, American Heart Association, President of Twin County Friendship Club and a retired employee of Burlington Industries. Ivra Elizabeth Cox Dickerson funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997 at The First Baptist Church with interment in Felts Cemetery. ELDER, Leighwood S., 75, of Roanoke, left his earthly home and family from Merino Drive on Sunday morning, February 16, 1997, to join his Lord and the heavenly congregation. He fought a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease and witnessed to many during his illness. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 53 years, Sarah Kiddy Elder; a loving daughter and son-in-law, Sharyn E. Rosenbaum and Curtis Rosenbaum of Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph D. Elder and Bernice Elder of Edwardsburg, Mich.; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, W. L. Kiddy and Carolyn Kiddy of Ocoee, Fla., Margaret and Earl Phoebus of Beckley, W.Va., JoAnn and Daniel Butler, Nancy and Richard Ara of Roanoke; also a number of nieces and nephews. His lifelong goal was to build the Kingdom of God. He was founder and first pastor of the Wesleyan Chapel Church, Beckley, W.Va. and former pastor of the Christian Nation Church in Mount Hope, W.Va. He was first pastor of the First C hurch of the Nazarene, Salem, Va. and served the Hollins in East Gate Churches and the Nazarene, Roanoke, Va. on an interim basis. He was a member of the Penn Forest Wesleyan Church in Roanoke where he taught the ``I Can Bee Bible Class"" and founded their church library. He retired from Salem Quality Equipment Company at the age of 73. Funeral services will be conducted from the Penn Forest Wesleyan Church, Chaparral Drive, Roanoke, Va. at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997. Officiating will be the Rev. Steve Martin, the Rev. L. E. Humrich and the Rev. Vic Reasoner. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997. FARROW, James Lloyd, 73, of Salem, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997. He served his country during World War II in the Navy. A member of Fort Lewis Baptist Church, he is survived by his wife, Virginia Farrow, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997, from the Chapel of John M. Oakey and Son in Salem, with the Rev. Leonard Southern officiating. FOLEY, L. Cornelia, 82, of Noblesville, Ind., died Saturday, February 15, 1997. She was born September 15, 1914 in Roanoke, Va. and was the widow of Calvin E. Foley. She was also a member of White Rock Baptist Church and was employed by Kenrose Manufacturing and Lewis-Gale Hospital for many years. Surviving are a daughter, Ann McKenney of Noblesville, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Foley of Hardy, Va.; two brothers, Judson Tribbett and Deaner Tribbett both of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Elizabeth Tribbett of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at White Rock Baptist Church. Interment will follow in White Rock Church Cemetery. FRAZIER, Virginia Atkins, 86, of Farmville, formerly of Salem, died Saturday, February 15, 1997. Born on September 6, 1910, in Rappahannock Co., she was the daughter of late George Milton Atkins and Mary Frances Ni chols. She had lived in Salem for 53 years and attended Salem Baptist Church. She was the widow of Allie Washington Frazier. Two brothers and one sister predeceased her. She was the mother of the Rev. Dr. Allie Washington Frazier Jr., retired rector of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville; three grandchildren, Linda Frazier Snelling of Charlottesville, Anne Frazier Wilson of Richmond and Mary Catherine Frazier of Charlottesville, and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Salem Baptist Church or the charity of donor's choice. Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral of Farmville is serving the Frazier family.
HAWKS, (``Bill""), of 16265 Church Street, Abingdon, died Saturday, February,15, 1997, at his home. He was a native of Virginia, and a resident of Abingdon for the past 15 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, and was a marketing representative for Hartford Mutual Insurance Company. He was a member of Soul's Harbor Church in Rosedale. Survivors include his wife, Connie S. Hawks; one daughter, Jessica L. Franklin of Abingdon; one son, J. R. Franklin of Abingdon; four sisters, Blanche E. Hawks of Roanoke, Jean H. Martin of Richmond, Joanne H. Griffith of Galax and Carol H. Osborne of Daleville; several nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Hawks will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Keene officiating. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, Lebanon. Pallbearers will be William Martin, Jeffrey Osborne, David Smith, Kevin Smith, Frankie Caldwell and Gary Lasley. HOLDREN, Frank Murrell, 88, of Roanoke, died Sunday, February 16, 1997. Mr. Holdren was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon and Elder. He served in the United States Army during World War II, was retired from Whitescarver Engineering Company with 20 yea rs of service and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Moon Holdren; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and David Meincke of Blacksburg, and two granddaughters, Allison Meincke of Burlington, N.C., and Kristin Meincke of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. W. Philip West officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. IRVIN, Margie Creger, 76, of Rt. 2, Rural Retreat, died Sunday morning, February 16, 1997 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mae Robinson Creger. Surviving include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Bub ``Vivian"" Hagy of Rural Retreat, Mrs. Jammie and Greeta Neese of Charlotte, N.C.; one so n, Larry Irvin of Oxbridge, Mass.; two sisters, June Creger of Wytheville, Louise Creger of Wytheville. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. MILLER, Attie R., on Sunday, February 16, 1997 in Twin County Hospital, Galax, Va. the earthly life of one of Grayson County's most devoted teachers came to a triumphant close. Mrs. Attie R. Miller, who taught for 47 years, beginning in a one room school house, died after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Rector. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter K. Miller; three sisters, ``Little Anna,"" Mrs. Myrtle Wiley, Mrs. Ruth Park; and one brother, Clayton Rector; one nephew, Robert Chapman Wiley. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Marie Miller, Gate City; three nieces, Anne Nall (Bill), Prince George, Pam Myrtle (Rick), Cary, N.C., Rosamond Danavan, Birdmont Retirement Home, Wytheville; one nephew, Dr. Gary Miller (Karen), Danville; and a cousin, Marilyn Park Cassevens (Frank), Winston-Salem, N.C. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997 with the Rev. Virginia Eminhizer officiating at Vaughan-Guynn Chapel. QUESENBERRY, Vena Surratt, 94, of Hillsville, died Saturday, February 15, 1997 in Eldercare of Hillsville. Born September 4, 1902 in Carrol County, daughter of the late Patrick Surratt and Mariah Ogle Surratt, Mrs. Quesenberry was preceded in death by her husband, Roy H. Quesenberry. She is survived by three daughters and son-in-law, Nancy and Rush Hull, Hillsville, Angela Marshall, Hillsville, Linda Wainstock, Milwaukee, Wis.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kelyon and Pat Quesenberry, Jackson, Tenn., Maurice and Pauline Quesenberry, Hillsville, Larry and Beulah Quesenberry, Annandale; one sister, Edith Dalton, Stephen City; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; special care givers, Edna Brooks, Betty Carter, Kitty Stone, and Kay Wilkerson. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 1997 in Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Quesenberry Cemetery. ROBERTSON, Maynard Lester, 66, of Staffordsville, died Saturday, February 15, 1997 at his home. He was born January 12, 1931 at Thessalia, Va. the son of the late Grady and Effie Ge rtrude Havens Robertson. He is survived by his wife, Betty Pearl Stafford Robertson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell and Robbie Robertson, Staffordsville, Gregory and Betty Ann Robertson, Pearisburg; four sisters, Opal Woodyard, Staffordsville, Cuba Liddle, Chicago, Ill., Barbara (Chine) Hale, Salem, Alva Meadows, Pearisburg; one brother, Grady (Bunt) Robertson, St. Marys, W.Va.; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate with the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial in the Birchlawn Burial Park, Peariburg. VESTER, Mary Ellen Kingery, 88, of Roanoke, died Sunday, February 16, 1997. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was a former member of th e Violet Chapter-Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Stonewall Jackson Kingery and Samuel H. Vester. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carson Agnor and Robert Agnor. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen and Terry L. Nabers; grandson, James Robert Nabers all of Roanoke; one sister, Katherine G. Patsel of Vinton; nieces, Lois Strum of Roanoke, Joann Jacobs of Vinton; nephews, Gary Patsel, Robert Patsel both of Vinton, and William Agnor, Raleigh, N.C.; dedicated caregivers, Anna Bess, Susan Bess, Virginia Kirkwood, and Lisa Kirkwood. WILLS, Glenn O., 83, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997. Mr. Wills was a charter member and deacon of the Ninth Street Church of the Brethren where he remained an active member. He was a retired Roanoke City Police Officer and Virginia's First State Fraternal Order of Police President. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank A. Wills and Berta Dooley Wills. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucy Bowles Wills; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Wanda Wills and Steven and Wanda Wills; three grandchildren, Stephen and Shirley Wills, Stephanie and Charles Garner and Michelle Wills; one great-grandson, Alexander Garner; two stepgrandchildren, Chris and Sarah Ronk; one sister, Beulah Chandler and a number of loving nieces and nephews. WILSON, Janelle Shelor, 79, of Fincastle, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997, in a Salem hospital. Surviving are her husband, Clarence C. (``Sam"") Wilson, and several nieces and nephews.
