A GOLDIN SHOOTING TOUCH CARRIES RANDOLPH-MACON

Randolph-Macon College guard Joe Goldin made all 11 of his 3-point attempts and set two NCAA Division III records Sunday in the Yellow Jackets' 94-74 victory over Emory & Henry.

Goldin, a sophomore from Springfield, scored a career-high 43 points and helped Randolph-Macon shoot 86 percent from 3-point range for the game. The loss broke Emory & Henry's seven-game home win streak.

Goldin's performance broke the national record for highest 3-point percentage in a game and also broke the record for most consecutive 3-point field goals made in a game. The previous record was shared by Brad Block of Aurora (Ill.) and Jim Berrigan of Framingham State (Mass.), who each went 10-for-10 in games in 1988.

A former teammate of Goldin, Kurt Axe, held the previous Old Dominion Athletic Conference record for consecutive makes. Axe, the 1995-96 ODAC player of the year, was 9-of-9 last season at Emory & Henry. The state Division III record was held by Mary Washington's John Yurchak, who went 10-for-10 in a game in 1989.

Wasps junior and former William Byrd standout Donald Childress led Emory & Henry with 19 points. Justin Porterfield (Northside) had eight assists in the losing cause.

Emory & Henry fell to 9-15 overall, 9-9 in the ODAC. With the victory, Randolph-Macon (14-10, 12-6) rose into third place in the ODAC, one-half game ahead of Bridgewater and Hampden-Sydney.

In other games Sunday:

Rhode Island 85, Temple 82: Tyson Wheeler scored 25 points, including the three that put his team up for good, as the Rams defeated the Owls in South Kingstown, R.I.

Wheeler had five 3-point goals and teammate Ibn-Hashim Bakari also had five 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 22 points for Rhode Island (15-8, 9-4 Atlantic 10). Temple's Pepe Sanchez went 7-7 from 3-point range for a career-high 27 points.

The Owls (14-8, 7-5) got a game-high 29 points from Marc Jackson, who did all of his work inside. Jackson, who did not attempt a 3-point shot, scored eight field goals and went 13-of-14 from the free-throw line.

No. 13 New Mexico 57, Tulsa 51: In Albuquerque, N.M., Charles Smith scored 18 points and made two free throws with 12.5 seconds left as the Lobos held off the Golden Hurricane.

The win gave New Mexico (20-4, 9-3) its eighth 20-win season in the past nine years and moved the Lobos into a tie with Tulsa (19-7, 9-3) for second place in the Mountain Division of the Western Athletic Conference behind Utah.

New Mexico, which hit only six of 32 shots in the second half, was clinging to a 53-51 lead when Smith was fouled on an inbounds play by Tulsa's Michael Ruffin. Smith hit both foul shots, and after Tulsa's Rod Thompson missed a short jumper, the Lobos' Clayton Shields added two more free throws.

Indiana 84, No. 14 Michigan 81, OT: In Ann Arbor, Mich., freshman A.J. Guyton scored 31 points as the Hoosiers stormed back from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat the Wolverines in overtime.

Guyton made a jumper in the lane that gave Indiana (20-7, 7-6 Big Ten) an 83-81 lead with 26.1 seconds remaining in overtime. Andrae Patterson, who scored 14 points, finished it with a free throw with 5.4 seconds left.

Guyton, whose previous high was 24 points against Ohio State, made two 3-pointers in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.

Michigan (17-7, 7-5) worked the ball over to Jerod Ward on the left side for a 3-pointer but his shot went off the rim as the horn sounded.

No. 18 Villanova 75, Notre Dame 70: In Philadelphia, Alvin Williams scored 25 points and Tim Thomas added 22 as the Wildcats held off the Irish.

Williams also had seven assists as the Wildcats (18-7, 9-5 Big East) rebounded from losses to Kentucky and Pittsburgh. Pat Garrity scored 22 points for the Irish and Matt Gotsch had 17 points and five blocks.

A pair of 3-pointers by Antoni Wyche and Admore White pulled Notre Dame (12-10, 6-8) within a point, 71-70, with seven seconds left.

But Williams sank a pair of free throws to give Villanova a 73-70 cushion and a pair of Thomas foul shots sealed the win.

Memphis 62, No. 23 Tulane 56: In New Orleans, Sunday Adebayo, not expected to play because of a torn ligament, scored 22 points as the Tigers beat the Green Wave.

Tulane (16-9, 7-3 Conference USA) has lost four straight following an 11-game winning streak.

Memphis (13-12, 7-4) was not sure if Adebayo would play again this season because of the partly torn anterior cruciate ligament. Cedric Henderson scored 16 points for Memphis.

Jerald Honeycutt had 21 points for Tulane.

St. Joseph's 77, Fordham 66: In New York, Duval Simmonds and Dimitri Domani scored 17 points each, and Terrell Myers scored 16 as the Hawks sent the Rams to their fifth consecutive loss.

St. Joseph's (17-6, 10-3 Atlantic 10) took a 14-3 lead, getting six points from Domani.

Chris DiMascio, who scored 18 points, made consecutive 3-pointers for Fordham (6-15, 1-12). But Domani scored eight points during a 14-5 run that increased the lead to 28-14 midway through the first half.

Women

No. 9 Virginia 73, Florida St. 44: In Charlottesville, DeMya Walker scored 21 points and the Cavaliers handed the Seminoles their 15th consecutive loss.

Virginia (19-5, 11-3 ACC) improved to 14-0 against the Seminoles (5-19, 0-14), who last won Dec. 22 against Stetson.

The Cavaliers led 39-29 with 16 minutes left, then outscored the Seminoles 23-7 over the next 10 minutes. Walker started the run with a layup and added seven free throws.
