STAUNTON RIVER TAKES TRACK TITLE

The Staunton River boys' track team proved Saturday that it can be successful under any conditions.

The Golden Eagles, the defending Group AA outdoor track and field champs, won the state invitational indoor meet Saturday at Heritage High School in Lynchburg. Staunton River amassed 102 points, well ahead of second-place Charlottesville's 68. (Complete team scores in Scoreboard. B5)

Other Timesland teams included sixth-place Christiansburg (23 points), ninth-place Salem (14 ), 17th-place Liberty (6), 18th-place Blacksburg (5) and 21st-place Lord Botetourt (2).

Heritage won the girls' championship with 65 points. Salem was ninth (15), Staunton River tenth (12), Christiansburg 11th (11), Patrick County 12th (8) and Blacksburg was 16th (2).

The Golden Eagles' boys team won the indoor title without competing in the regional meet. Staunton River wasn't allowed to go to the regionals because of unsafe road conditions, but considering its mastery of different surfaces and atmospheres, maybe the team should have run there.

Jarrett Ferguson won three events for Staunton River, the long jump (22 feet, four inches), triple jump (44 feet, one inch) and 300-yard dash (34 seconds). Ferguson also was part of the mile relay winners with Doug Eubank, Johnny Coles and Ahmad Sangbana. Eubank also won the pole vault (11 feet, six inches) and Sangbana won the 600-yard dash (1:19.4).

For Christiansburg, Matt Nolan was second in the mile and fourth in the 1,000. Zack Johnson placed fourth in the 600.

Salem's Mike Henry was second in the 60-yard high hurdles and the Spartans were third in the 880 relay.

On the girls' side, Paula Nolan of Staunton River won the shotput and set a meet record with a heave of 31 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Teammate Candy Kidd was fifth in the mile.

Christiansburg's Laura Evans won the mile in 5:42.3 and was fourth in the two-mile. Salem's Ashley Bush was fourth in the 60-yard hurdles. The Spartans also had a second-place 880 relay team and a fifth-place mile relay team.
